We have our cable modem hooked up to a wall outlet about 75ft away.
When i split the cable to my tv and my cable modem the cable modem won't connect to the internet. But the tv will get a great picture.
What are the factors for this?

The splitter is likely the problem then. You might need a special one to pass both the TV and the Internet signals through. The cable guy installed a splitter out in the box; I never got a good look at it, but from it, we have a direct-run cable to our cable modem - more or less. It's a direct run to the wall socket - from there, we just used a regular coax cable from a retail store, and it works fine. Maybe 50-60 feet total run.
Maybe the cable company can help out here with parts you'd need.
Or, do you have two separate lines into the house, one for the Internet, one for TV? If so, split up the TV line, and leave the Internet wire just for the cable modem.

My parents just got Cable through adelphia and had the same problem it ended up being a bad spliter on the out side of the house. A Tech came and gave them a new spliter and it works fine now.

Cable can go on pretty long runs how fr do u think it was to your house from the cable co? Prety much all the time its just a bad splitter at your house.

You shouldn't be wasting your time trying to figure this out. Call your provider and have them fix it.

I too would contact the cable company. It's possible that the splitter is bad, but it is also possible that when you split the cable you are decreasing the signal strength to the point where your cable modem cannot estabilsh/maintain a connection.

A 2-way splitter decreases signal strength by 3.5dB. You should go into your cable modem's setup web page and see what your downstream and upstream signal levels are at without a splitter. From that we can see if they will be too low with a splitter.
