Bluebook on it is $3,250 and they're asking $3,150. It has a new clutch (Brand new) and had new brakes and tires last year. It has 109,000 miles on it and they say it's in good condition. I was wondering what you thought a reasonable price for it would be? Going to go look at it on Thursday after work, with my dad who's a mechanic...

KBB prices are usually quite high compared to actual market value. RossMAN's link is more reasonable. Gotta love Edmunds.

Offer $2500-$2750 MAX.

Come back and ask after you see it. Used cars at that age/mileage are all over the map in price, depending on condition. If it's a good car, your dad will tell you to buy it anyway. Offer $2,500 cash and end up around $2,800. Geo prizms are a good deal, because they're basically Toyota Corollas with out the "Toyota tax."

I agree with Garfang & Skoorb.

Assuming the car is in good condition, maintained well then the highest I would go is $2,800

I own a 1994 Toyota Corolla DX and so far it's been great, albeit the $600+ repair bill from last month

Hrmm, Not even sure if I want to go look at it now. It's a long drive, and if they're not willing to budge on the price it would be a huge waste of time.

They probably are willing to budge on the price, and who knows, it might be a great car, worth even more. Like I said, it's a Toyota, only cheaper and IMHO, better looking.

Call them in a month, when they haven't sold it, and then see if they're willing to budge. Also, I have a friend with a 1990 Geo Prism that has had nothing but problems. Not all Toyotas (or Geos, for that matter) are gems. YMMV.

I think one of the reasons they're asking so much is because it has a brand new clutch, but I guess the lady got a new car. Should I go look at it, and then see if she's willing to budge, or just ask right out

You can find them on Autotrader for well less than that. Get your dad's OK that it's in good shape & you've had a chance to drive it & look it over really well, start your offer at $1200 or so. I doubt you'd have to go higher than $1800 for it. It's (almost) 10 years old & a Geo at that. Just because they've had problems with it doesn't mean that you should shoulder the cost of the parts they had to buy for it.

True dat, which is why Dad the mechanic will be looking at it, but if it is any good, I doubt it will still be for sale in a month.

It's mechanically identical to the Toyota Corolla, otherwise I wouldn't touch it..

How do I go about asking for a lower price without pissing them off? Should I say, if you don't sell it and you would like to go lower give me a call?

My family owns a '93 Prizm Lsi (same car) 1.8L 108HP, thought I'd share my experiences with it. It has 120k miles. The wheel speed sensor on the front right tire went bad, so ABS no longer works ($600+ fix). Starter went bad ($500+ for replacement). Replaced the alternator twice. Door handle broke.

It's not a bad car but it's nothing special. The A/C isn't too impressive on hot days. Interior is surprisingly modern looking for a '93. Don't plan on winning any races. If you do any "inspired" driving, brake fade gets pretty bad. The trunk opening is fairly small, subwoofer boxes have to be on the small side to fit in there. This car was strange, sort of a "black hole" for bass. I had four 12" kicker solo-barics in it and the bass still wasn't all that powerful. I put the woofers in another car and it was unbelievable. I'm not sure if the truck just doesn't seal good or what. The system I had installed probably had something to do with the alternators failing.

Just bought the car, ended up paying $2950. I wasn't going to go that high, but the engine is in excellent mechanical condition, and has a very clean interior. It has a brand new clutch, less than 1 year old tires, less than 1 year old brakes, and has been kept up pretty well. It also had AC installed a couple of years back, I think 98 and that cost $1000. I think I got a good deal, and also something I found simply amazing, the oil is coming up on 3000 miles(Has 13 miles to go) and the oil is CLEEEAAN, I'm very happy with it.
