dvd-rw and dvd+rw can be read by conventional set top dvd players.
dvd-ram only holds data.
consider this when you buy

Interesting, unfortunately Goroyalpc.com has extremely bad feedback @ ResellerRatings.com. And their alter ego (www.miradex.com) also has poor ratings. Think I'll wait until I can buy the drive from a more reliable source...

You DO NOT need a 1394 card for an IDE drive. You just need an IDE interface...every computer has one.

If you're talking about video capture, then that's another story. You may or may not need a firewire card. There are several ways to capture video.

Or buy from a different site and use AMEX Blue to price match.

just wondering if anyone found a site that sells it, other than this, for pricematching? a quick pricewatch and pricegrabber search yielded no hits

Does anyone know why this Pioneer A03 is NOT available from NORMAL vendors? By normal I mean Circuit City, Best Buy (maybe not "normal"), Buy.com, Amazon.com, etc.

It only seems to be available from wholesale mailorder vendors. And I can't find one sub-$400 that looks reputable...

Please excuse my ignorance, but does this mean one can copy DVD movies now? Or is the main thing that the DVD disks hold much more information than CDRs?

Most DVD movies are dual-layer, and these DVD-R's are not, so I doubt you can copy a DVD movie.

Also, be careful, as not all set-tops can read DVD-RW discs. From what I have read, I though only the DVD-R's were the ones that could be read in set-top players. (the Pioneer does write DVD-R's)

you can copy dvds but you have to make rips of them. i.e. most movie dvds are 7gig+ discs, where these are 4.7gig so you have to take parts out of the movies to make them work. i'm gonna wait till the prices go down all over cause i want to make my own dvd movies (not pr0n but thats another idea...)

I know the price will keep dropping (it always does), but I need one of these now for a project I'm working on. This A03 was $1200 last summer, $700 in the fall. I just ordered a new retail boxed Pioneer A03 from Newegg for $435 delivered.

It's like anything in the PC world: You are basically buying "time of use". If you need it now, you pay the current price for the current technology.

You can strip down the movie to fit on one of these single lay discs, but seeing at how DVD-Rs are about $15, you might as well just buy the real thing. One thing that could be cool is burning 4.7 gigs on mp3 on to a DVD to play in an Apex DVD player.
If I had a decent DV cam I would grab one of these in a heartbeat... burning your own progressive, anamorphic DVDs.... drool....

I thought that would be awesome, too! But I have heard that this will not work, because it will try to read it as a DVD and play video. Supposedly, it would confuse the player and not work. Anyone else know about this?
