This concerns Intuit TurboTax rebates. I've been doing rebates for years, quite a few of them by now and I always get my money... until now. I'm real careful when I fill in the forms, make my receipt copies, etc. etc. I make sure I go through all the hoops, cross the T's, dot the I's, you get the picture.
Last year I went to Costco and bought TurboTax Federal and Turbotax State (CA), and got my $10 rebate from Costco for the Federal but when I read the fine print on the Intuit 100% rebate (product is "FREE") for the TT state, it said I had to mail it to them within 30 days of purchase. I'm sure they knew that a whole lot of folks would buy it when they saw it in the stores and not get around to doing their taxes until April, and I was no different. So, I got stiffed by Intuit for that $24.99. I bitched, sent emails, big deal. Of course, nobody got back to me. No surprise there. But I was mad!
This year (probably after a lot of bad feedback like mine) they didn't try that trick. Of course, I checked the fine print this time the minute I got it home. I sent for my rebates immediately, before doing my taxes, too. Yesterday I got both rebate checks:
$10 from Costco for my TurboTax Federal ($33.99 - $10 = $23.99, + taxes, of course). That was OK.
$10 from Intuit (through Parago) for my TurboTax State. I paid $24.99 + tax. It was supposed to be for the full purchase price up to $29.95, and the confirmation email I got after sending in the rebate form does say up to $29.95. I had sent them a copy of my receipt that showed as plain as day that I'd paid $24.99 (plus tax) for my TT state.
I couldn't find a number to call at the Intuit website, so I called long distance information (1-800-555-1212) and got an 800 number for Intuit. I went through the routing system and heard a message encouraging me to check out their website and it hung up on me. I went to Yahoo Yellow Pages and looked up Intuit and got some not toll-free numbers and dialed one. I got their corporate offices and a human and was told to dial the 800 number but I should pick the option to buy Turbotax and I'd get a human. I did this and told them my story and was given eventually an 800 number for rebate problems (800-605-2652). I called that and retold my story and was asked to fax them my receipt showing I'd paid $24.99, include my rebate tracking number and I would get a reimbursement check. They gave me a fax number, 317-805-5581. I scanned my receipt, wrote a cover letter and tried to fax it all to the supplied number last night (9 PM) but got a message that the number had been disconnected. I will have to call the 800 rebates number again this morning and ask them what's up with that. This all makes me extremely suspicious about the Turbotax programs. How can they be doing a good job for you when they are evidently trying to stiff you for your rebates? I'm going to have to give very careful thought to finding a better way to do my taxes, folks!
Edit: I called them today and told them the fax number I was given was a disconnected number. I was asked what number it was and put on hold. After one more hold I was told they would send me a check for what they still owe me within 15 business days, no fax necessary. So I guess that's it. I bet there will be a LOT of other folks to whom this happens. It's just impossible for me to believe that they misinterpreted what I sent them. It couldn't have been clearer.
