>>> I disputed the charge on my CC and just received a favorable ruling and had the charged permanetly removed on 1/9.<<<

GetReal,

These rebates 'normally' take 8 weeks or so to be processed, and usually longer with CompUSA...as you know, a credit card dispute has to be filed within 60 days of the date of the statement where the purchase appears...so usually it's too late to file a dispute on a rebate item. I'm curious, did you initiate the dispute before the 60 days were up? Also, was the CC an Amex, or other type of card? I'm asking because I purchased the Glenayre Visor with an Amex, and it sounds like there is something to be concerned about, even though my rebates are currently showing 'approved.' Thanks.

I have had to call CompUSA Corp rebate office a number of times over the past two years. It's been awhile since I called them because I have been going back to the B&M to let them handle lately. I used to talk to Sharon or John in corp and they always handled my rebate problems (i.e. sent me corp checks) when I explained my situation and that the rebate center/vendor would not pay on a valid rebate. I guess corp has reorganized and are blowing off their rebate problems.

As a side note, I just received a $50 rebate check for a PK Electronics UPS I bought back in June. When the rebate was due I called the rebate center and they advised that PKE went out of business and they could no longer pay the rebate. They said to contact CompUSA. I went to my B&M store and told them about the problem. They supposedly contacted corp who said it was ok to pay me. They gave me a credit back on my CC. I will cash the $50 check and not feel the least bit bad about it (I'm basically an honest person) because CompUSA and their rebate centers have cost me so much grief, time and money dealing with sleazy rebate offers over the past several years. They are the main reason that I hate rebates.:|

Just got my $10.00 rebate from the 256 Meg Crucial DDR PC2100 ram they had for sale for $35.00 before rebate from a few weeks ago at Best Buy. That was actually pretty quick! I bought 2 modules but decided to be honest and only get the "one rebate per household".

-Purchased 9/21 w/ AMEX Blue
-Rebate showed approved when I checked on 11/4
-Rebate showed as denied when I checked again on 12/18
-Called CompUSA corp on 12/8 spoke to Ron Majors and was told "we do pay disputed rebates any more"
-Caledl AMEX Blue card services right after and disputed charge of $189.74 ( $179.00 + 6% tax).
-Dispute was conditionally granted and I was told to provide a signed copy of affadavit from AMEX website or they could mail me a copy and return to them.
-Printed copy and mail it along with a copy of the sales receipt and the original COmpUSA Sunday insert dated 9/16.
-Forgot about the entire issue over the holidays.
-Received a call on 1/9 from the AMEX examiner handling my dispute telling me that it was closed in my favor. I was shocked beacuse my prior disputes usually take several months to receive a final resolution. I asked the examiner why it was closed so fast and was told that CompUSA did not respond to the complaint within the 15 business days required. I asked if I needed to return the item to CompUSA since the charge was reversed and was to not to worry about it and to keep it.
-This past Tuesday, I received an official printed letter from AMEX stating my dispute was closed and resolved in my favor

MY backup plan if my displute was declined or not ruled in my favor was to use AMEX return protection. I have not used AMEX return protection before so I do not know how that would have worked out.

BTW - Just curious. Has anyone received a New Rochelle rebate check for a CompUSA rebate offer since 12/1/2001?

I haven't used it either, but Return Protection stipulates '90 days from date of purchase,' so you would only have had until 12/21 to file that claim.

Thanx for the info. I'm almost *hoping* my rebate status changes to denied, because I only have a few days left to dispute with Amex if there are problems...after the 25th, I will have no right to do so. The rebate check is scheduled to be mailed 3/5; that's a long time to be in limbo.

I have 3 rebates due 1/19/02 (today), for the 128MB PNY Memory (CompUSA/McAllen, TX), the FMI junk CDRs (CompUSA/New Rochelle), and the QPS Que 16x10x40 CDRW (CompUSA/New Rochelle). I doubt they'll come Monday; I'll be calling the rebate center Monday. My backup plan is not return protection though...it's going to a consumer advocacy group and the media...it's about time these people stopped messing around with our money.

If AMEX did not accept my dispute on 12/18, I was going to file a claim under return protection that same day. I initially purchased the Glenayre combo as a gift, but I had aquired another at Office Depot under another deal as a backup if I needed to return the one purchased on 9/21. My risk was that my dispute was accepted, but later not ruled in my favor and I was beyond the return protection limit, but that was a risk I was willing to take. (I really had no other choice other than litigation over a $100?). I don't want to think what I may have said to AMEX if they would have refused my dispute because I had just returned from court over the ZDnet Advantage fiasco and was hyped up and ready to fight

Microsoft Rebate Woes continued:

SilentRunning asks about sending in the entire box top and not just the UPC. I did send in the box top (so bulky) and they "lost it" anyway.

About the Ridgely MD vs the New Jersey processing site, as BillRubin asks, I did not think to ask who was actually running the show. The person I talked with said that processing was being done in NJ because of problems in Maryland. I hear that sort of answer as an excuse so often when I call processing centers and computer software and hardware companies that I didn't give it much weight and didn't grill him on what had happened. Oh well.

One additional problem. Before this broke I had bought Microsoft PictureIt Photo at Circuit City where it sold for the amount of an attached Microsoft rebate. The rebate form was attached with those store sensor tags to the back of the box. It was a photocopy of both sides of the form. Only one problem. NO MAILING ADDRESS. I'll try calling NJ after the holiday. Struck me as the most novel way yet of discouraging rebate submissions. Microsoft comes through with another inovation in retail!!!

I purchased MS Money 2002 standard and MS Encarta Deluxe at CompUSA in Mid-November. Both have Microsoft $10 MIRs and I sent in only the product label with the UPC vs the entire box top. I received both rebates last week. Total turn around time about 7 weeks so not to bad and well within their stated time frame. However, I do miss the 2-3 weeks turnaround that MS usd to provide out of Ridgely, MD

<< FirstUSA credit cards won't dispute a charge over a rebate. >>

What if you write above your signature on the receipt, "Includes $xx.xx rebate"?
I've been doing this, but I don't know if it provides additional protection.

FirstUSA regularly violates federal credit card law. I disputed a hotel bill
I'd charge to my FUSA MC, and they refuse to do anything about it because
I didn't leave the hotel on the first day (no other places within 90 miles). I
later made almost the same dispute with Citibank Visa for a different hotel,
and they credited my account in a couple of weeks.

Give the rebate companies one chance. If they do not get me my rebate within the specified time frame I do not waste my time with phone calls and the run around anymore. I simply go to the BBB website and file a complaint. So far so good.

I have had more than $5 for about 2 months now and I haven't gotten a check as of yet. So I hope they actually will pay out, when was the last time one of you got a check?

Given the odds are very very slim that FirstUSA gets a hardcopy of your receipt, and instead just gets the electronic version, I doubt it gives you any protection at all.

Also, wouldn't they have to agree to it for it to be in any way binding?

<< Do you guys really checks from ebates?
I have joined ebates for months and never received a check.
>>

As someone else asked, when did you join, and how much is in your account? They pay on a quarterly basis, 45 days after the quarter ends. This means that they will be sending out checks around 2/15, for purchases credited by 12/31. If you did not have $5 in your account for the last rebate period, this check will include that amount, if you've reached $5.

Ebates is one of the really good places. It's not right to badmouth them unfairly.

That is most likely the store's fault, those rebate stickers were probably put on there. I believe the form is available online somewhere, check the appropriate thread here or at FW.

Has anyone got the $15 rebate from Hi-tech for the 50 pack CDR's. I got it on the Thanksgiving day early bird specials from Staples and sent the rebate on 11/26/01. So far no trace of it. No phone number or website. Is there anyone in the same boat?

I'm in the boat for the $15 and $25 rebates....I'll give it another couple of weeks, then I will go to Staples and demand my money or at least a Hi-Tech contact number...

By the way, do I need to go to the exact Staples that I purchased the stuff at? I purchased them at two separate locations...

How about MSN Holiday Reward? I bought Nikon 995 with it on 12-11-2001 but I have not received anything or notice yet. I checked the site (www.eshop.msn.com) but no customer service info can be found. Is there a way to contact them about the status?

Thanks,
