Reboot Probs...

hi all, ive been having a ton of reboot issues for the past few weeks. have not installed any new hardware and have been running an Abit IC7, 2 512 sticks of corsair ram, radeon 9700 with an antec true PS (forgot total W but it was around 480 i think, i knew i need the power for the 9700). i built this system myself.

i am rebooting several times per day. i do not get the BSOD ever, the comp simply restarts. im running win xp. i checked off write event to sysyem log but im not surehow to check the log? /shrug no mesages before or after reboots.

for the past few days the comp ALWAYS seems to reboot in the morning when i first use it. generally, it will reboot 2x when i first go online when i am checking my emails, scores... it also seems to reboot more often when the monitor goes into sleep mode from sitting idle. it will reboot even when it "warms off" although it doesnt seem to be as much as these other occassions. there's no true rhyme or reason that i can tell, just times it occurs more often.

i have not installed anything new lately. been playing lineage 2 for a bit, a few lockups while playing. no new hardware or software. tonight i tried unplugging everything from the outlet and surge protector figuring maybe something funky in the electric. it didnt help. im at a loss and dont know where to start. obvious choice is PS but its a top of the line antec and only a year-year and a half old.

any help would be appreciated, the forums have always been a huge help. thanks in advance.

Do you have a hardware and/or software firewall, current antivirus software with current engine and definitions, and have you run an antivirus scan recently? If so, is it clean? Also, if you have a high-risk behavior like a P2P program... try not using it

Also, set your memory to 2.5-3-3-7 at 2.7-2.8 volts if you haven't already. Your board uses a chipset that doesn't like super-tight timings very well, historically.

thanks mech, i saw your post earlier with someone having almost identical probs to me. i just finished changing my memory, changed it to 2.8 as you mentioned. i use AVG and keep it updated, scan daily. i made the mistake of loading up kazaa lite in the past few weeks but have barely used it. could that somehow be causing any issues? the timing from when i dl'd kazaa and had the reboot probs coincides. that thing always seems to screw something up. think that could be the prob?

thanks again for your help

You have a good power supply, but it still could be failing, or you may also have low voltage on your mains. Several recent viruses have also caused reboots.

are you sure your not getting a blue screen? did you uncheck the option to auto restart when a problem occurs?

sorry if you find that noobish, lots dont have it unchecked, maybe not here but there are

yeah tight i unchecked it. trust me, its not noobish, i am a noob when it comes to a lot of that stuff. im pretty good with hardware install but still learning when it comes to tweaking, error, system stuff.

generally, i click on something (not always the case), the system lags for a split sec and then screen goes black and it reboots, no error message before or after rebooting. it can happen again 2 mins or an hour later. its not constant, sometimes i can go a few hours.

thanks, i appreciate any help.

Check the Abit fourm if you haen't already to make sure this is not a known issue.

How are your temps?

Are you overclocking? If yes, go to stock specs. If no...

A dirty reinstall if you can't find the issue. (the second time XP install says "repair", not the first). THis may or may not fix issue.

Or backup, then do a clean format/reinstall this may or may not fix issue

Tip: If you have an extra hard drive laying around you could disconnect your current one, install Windows on the other one and see if issue remains.

thanks qquizz for lending a hand. temps are good, checked them right away. not overclocking at the moment (had a small overclock originally) but i set my bios to optimized defaults when the probs started. i was figuring i would try a fresh install, i do it from time to time for maintenance. can't think of anything else to try.

just seems weird that i ALWAYS get at least one reboot in the morning and usually a few at night when the monitor goes into sleep mode. i would normally leave my computer on but now i shut it off at night cause the computer would reboot a few times during the night from sleep mode and the damn beep would wake me up.
