Rebooting routers on Cable ISP

OK, the ISP uses DHCP. The routers need to be rebooted quite a bit. Is it possible they don't function well using DHCP?
Most of these routers are probably pretty low price Best Buy kind. Any kind of generic setting that will prevent this?
As soon as the router is rebooted everything is OK.
I work at an ISP and this isn't something we support but it'd be nice to be able to "recommend" a way to fix the problem since it happens all the time and it's pretty annoying.
The cable modem is up and functioning but there's no IP's behind it. Magically, upon router reboot I can see the router. Very annoying. Any help out there would be recommended. Mostly seems to be Linksys.

I have this problem once in a while when we get a power outage. I do not know why, but my router does not seem to sync back up with the cable modem until I reset the router. I quit trying to guess why after I moved my PC's away from my router....too much hassle for me to trouble shoot doing up & down 2 flights of steps at a time.....

Probably not much help to you, but I will verify that it works....and I have a SMC Barricade.

Hmm at the school I work for all of your campuses are connect via a cable modem network. Now they are kinda old cable modems (max speed 10) and they do use bootp for there config files. But did just get about 20 more of them (free from some place) if you think its worth it I will try and recreate the problem.

Now I don't know anything about how cable modems are setup for home use. But can you see the cable modem on the other side?

Thanks Remy, but you don't have to go through any extra trouble. I was just hoping there was some generic setting out there that I could recommend to eliminate too many call-backs.
I don't use a router myself so I wasn't really all that familiar with their internal support or differences across vendors.

Oh, and yes, I can see an IP address behind them if the right tools and modem system is being used. Basically, I can just see an IP address and how it's connected (ethernet or USB).
And no, I can't see what webpages you've been to!

My last job I worked for an ISP. I quit that after about a year. I was only getting paid 5.50 an hour and I was the only one that was employed for it! No joke. It was a small one and only like 100+ users so it wasnt like more than one person was really needed. But I was on call 24/7 too. I only took the job because I was 17 and I was all like dude work on computers or work in fast food. Hmmm

Hmm it sounds like they do not pickup there DHCP setting when they are supposed to be. I am thinking they might be configured wrong. Do you have a test one you can play with and see what happens?

Also what kind of release and get structure do you have on your DHCP setting?

If this happens can you renew the IP and setting by using the router software? Does this fix it?

Hmm I wish I had a test bed.

Edit:Minor error

I'd like to pick one up, however my wife controls the checkbook.
I guess I'll have to start strategically planting hacker articles around the house. I'm not sure the lease time for IP's but I believe it's around 7 days. Because it's not required for us to know that sort of thing it's basically not something we'll know. We are on a need-to-know basis, and we don't need to know
I like my job though. What other job pays you to surf the net?
Sorry to hear your experience wasn't that great, but it's sure better than my job at 17 (flipping burgers).

I also have a SMC Barricade router. Sometimes I can go 2-3 weeks before having to turn the power stripe off to reset the router and modem. And sometimes I have to do it 2 days in a row.

I have a D-Link 704P and a Toshiba Cable modem and I have never had this problem. Could it be a problem with your isp. I am on Cox and I have set upi over 50 houses with cable modems in the area and of the 20 or so who used routers none have had any problems. The other router I used was a Gigafast. Hope this helps.

Does Cox use DHCP or static? I was thinking it was just a DHCP issue, where the routers don't want a new IP address. Also, what brand of modems are you using?

I belive COX uses DHCP. I know you don't get a static IP so they have to use something such as that.
