Reccomend me a good scotch

I just gave notice because I got a new much better job so feel like celebrating a little.

I tried some scotch for the first time in 15 years a few weeks ago at my bro's house and it was actually good. Everything I remember about it from when I was a teen was it was crap thats why I didn't touch it in 15 years.

So what's a good one?

Depends on your taste, Islays are peatier and I think they taste like drinking booze through a burned telephone pole. Some of the highlands and speysides are quite good, they're fruitier and a bit more smooth. Generally, I prefer bourbon and irish whiskey. Or rum. I do like glenfiddich, McCallan, and a few others. Oban and Lagavulin are both Islays if I remember correctly.

balvenie for sure, The guys that recommended several islay scotches dont know what theyre talking about. stick with highland scotches for a beginner like yourself. Once you get adventurous then venture into a couple islay or island scotches which will not only be peatier but salty, definitely an acquired taste.

uclalabrat and apex are on the right track saying you should stick to a speyside or highland. so go for a balvenie, age depending on your budget.

Uh, no, not for a beginner. Laphroaig is the only scotch I've tried that I truly disliked. I'm still on the beginner-ish edge and the heavy peaty-ness was way over the top for me.

Balvenie is nice stuff, easy to get to like. McCallan and Glenfiddich are both accessible drinkers as well.

I don't drink often anymore so can afford to spend more when I do

Who the fuck likes Laphroiag, it smells exactly like burnt electronics. So if you like the smell of a fried motherboard or video card, and would like to be able to drink something with that smells exactly like that, it is for you.

I understand a little smokiness, but that stuff is overkill.

I had Blue Label. It really isnt worth 250 dollars.
Green, Gold, Red, and Black are all worth their cost. But both Green and Gold were discontinued so I expect their prices to rise soon.

Lagavulin 16 is a mainstay in my personal bar. If you can get your hands on Caol Ila 18, that is similar to lagavulin, but perhaps even more refined in terms of smoothness.

Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are pretty standard Speyside scotches that are pretty decent for everyday type events.

Btw, jw blue and jw kgv (new): I have found to not prefer their flavor compared to the now discontinued jw blue kgv based on my own a/b/c blind tasting. Ymmv

Some good stuff here. I'm not really a scotch drinker, so this is helpful.

I was in a little townie bar in France once, in the middle of the day. The local rep was making a delivery to the bar and gave me a sample of a scotch that he had. It had a little sweetness to it, which was very surprising. Of course I forgot the name almost as soon as I left the bar, and I've never been able to find any scotch like it since.

Any idea what scotch, or types of scotch, would have a slightly sweet taste?

It's not hate, it's recognition that it's an acquired taste. Most people can't start out with a real appreciation of full in-your-face peat. You start with something a lot less peaty and learn to savor the flavor, and move your way up.
