Nah. You should be looking at this one instead. It's cheaper and faster than the card you linked to.

8 pipelines is the mainstream right now. This is a single slot card so your chipset cooler can stay.

Keys is right- 6600GT is on par with the X700 at all games, stomps it flat at Doom3.

the 6600GT is on par with X700 XT, but it's nowhere to be found and would be even more expensive that the Pro.

i realized the error of my ways when my roomates 6600gt agp he got for $180 owned my card in world of warcraft (we have similar computers, my athlon 64 3000 vs p4 3000)

and well just got a used $150 6600gt on ebay pci-E and have been quite happy with the boost in speed. its like 45% faster in that particular game.

which X700 ? pro ? No you are WRONG, 6600GT is faster then X700Pro in almost all games by significant margin. It is not on par. Except maybe with the X700XT.

But for a little more, $250-$275 you can get the X800XL which owns them, and is in fact ON PAR with the 6800GT. It's defentely gonna be worth the extra $70

the 6800 gt still spanks the x800xl in doom3. its faster in WoW also.

in warcraft 3 anyway and doom3 a 6600gt is nearly as fast as an x800xl

you really know how to choose them - see what Maximum PC had to say about this card:

"There may be a kick-ass $200 videocard out there someplace, but the PCI Express Toxic X700 Pro isn?t it"

"Last month we reviewed a comparably priced MSI NX 6600 GT board, which is faster in every benchmark and fills only the single PCI Express slot you mount it in."

"With 12-pipe Radeon X800 XL-based videocards on the horizon at the same price point, and a better-performing nVidia solution available now, the X700-powered card looks like a bad buy. "

Score: 4/10

I feel sorry for the poor bastards on newegg (=clueless customers) who buy this and think it's a good card. And I haven't even mentioned the monsterous HSF yet....

true, 6800GT has advantage in OpneGL games, primarily Doom 3, but X800XL has advantage in pixel shader based games (although smaller advantage) like HL2. They're about even in Far Cry. Overall, there really is very little difference with each card having advantages in different games. So in fact, with the exception of Doom 3, the X800XL is ON PAR with 6800GT - it's not inferior at all.

yeah its still debateable if 6800 gt is better than x800 xl. 6800 gt prices are starting to drop, the cheapest 6800gt at newegg is i believe $349, while the chepest x800xl is $269.

for $80 i am not sure which i'd get. the 6800gt seems to have much better 64bit and linux support if that is important to you (the 64bit would somewhat be useful for me eventualyl if i get xp64). but that si still $60. thats why i went with the 6600gt at $170. $100 less than an x800xl, and fast enough with the better drivers. all 3 i'd say are good cards for their price ranges, the x700pro though in my experience is not really worth it unless you can pick upt a 128 or 256mb version in the $120 range.

No, 6800GT is right now OVERPRICED, as the price difference from X800XL cannot be justified. While it has a performance advantage in Doom 3, plus better Linux and 64 bit drivers, plus it has the SLI option, all this still doesn't justify $100 price premium ($370 is the cheapest for a 6800GT pci-e) over X800XL. It should be closer in price, probably around the $300 area would be more reasonable. So if non of these minor issues is very important to you (note that the linux and 64-bit driver support will most likely be fixed in the near future) then X800XL represents a MUCH better value right now.

Also the X800XL consumes less power and runs cooler and quieter then 6800GT, and despite getting owned in doom3 it actually leads in games based on the Source engine, which seems to be very popular among game developers, and there have already been a few new games based on Source engine from developers other than Valve. There are still no other games which use the Doom 3 engine, even though it has been released before HL2, which may suggest that this engine has some limitations.

6600GT is the best value for sub $200 price range.

Make Sure it has 256bit memory, the one you liked above has only a 128bit memory interface (6600gt 8pipe) and the one he linked had only 128bit memory; a real performance damper.

PNY offers a 256bit version for $209 and is the one to get.

wow you're so confused.......
All 6600GT cards, including PNY, EVGa and everyone else is 128bit/8 pipes. It's clearly shown on newegg site, as well as the PNY site. Your second link showing a 256bit card is for a 6800GT (repeat 6800GT - notice how it's a different number than 6600GT) which indeed has 16 pipes/256bit memory interface (but also costs twice as much), so maybe you got confused a little with the numbers. Just remember all 6600GT cards have 128bit memory interface cause that's what 6600GT GPU has. The only differences between these cards is if they have HDTV support (component out), dual DVI, and how much they overclock (but even that is usually similar - most can do at least 10% overclock, but almost never reach 20%). Also they differ in their packaging what extra software and accossories you get with the card, and the length of the warranty. Also some have more elaborate coolers but most use a similar layout to nvidia's reference design. This PNY 6600GT has dual DVI which is a plus, but nothing else about it is special, so it's still a little expensive as you can find other 6600GT's for $170 (evga and XFX are both nice brands and usually among the cheapest, asus and MSI are usually the most expensive but often have unique extras).

I suggest you read this anandtech article comparing different 6600GT instead of developing your own wild theories.....and confusing other people.

Easy there, Down boy down! I apologize for the mistake. I am dislexic and Sixes and Eights look much the same to (me) my eyes. I am not coming up with my own wild theroies, so THANK YOU for catching my little numerical mistake.

actually, regardless of your mistake, you did come up with your own theories about how some 6600GT have 256 bit memory interface while others have 128 bit : "Make Sure it has 256bit memory, the one you liked above has only a 128bit memory interface (6600gt 8pipe) and the one he linked had only 128bit memory; a real performance damper." This presumed difference between different cards is not mentioned by any article about 6600GT, so in fact you were just guessing by looking at some (wrong) spec sheets. That's really not the kind of research one is supposed to do before purposrting to give advice to others......
