Aren't they self-powered speakers?

What are you trying to connect to what? You might need something other than a receiver.

Some receivers costing $400+ have a 5.1 "preamp out" set of analog connections that you could feed to the speakers, but you won't find this on a $100 receiver.

You can get it for cheaper than $400, but it's still going to be pretty expensive...

Examples:
HK AVR-135 factory refurb = $178+shipping (they tend to go for under $200 through the seller harmanaudio I mentioned before with a new 2 year warranty included)
New Denon 1905 for $310
refub for cheaper

Overall if you're getting a higher end receiver so you can have preouts to send to a set of z-5500s, I think it's a bad idea.

Oh, and if the only sources of multichannel output are going to be DD encoded (DVDs etc) then you don't need the preouts. You can pass the AC3 stream to your control pod for decoding.

Uhhh.... I think most of them are based on credit card purchases.

If you need to use paypal, maybe ebay would be your best bet. I can vouch that harmanaudio is a good seller from the receiver I got from them, but I'm not sure other than that.

If you're still planning z-5500s + a $200 to $250 receiver, I'd suggest instead of paying $500-ish including shipping on that, to get a HTIB instead like an Onkyo 780 set or something.

That's a great deal on the HK if it does close under $200.

And that's good advice, as usual

I was just looking through your past threads on audio going back to the one you stated you had $400 to spend and didn't know what you wanted to do with it.

I hadn't realized the older threads were from you too. I'm not so great with remembering names so I didn't remember what we had talked about before.

Can you state over again everything you hope to do this this setup?

Do you want
stereo
2.1
5.1

Would you want to start off with 2.0/2.1 now and then make it 5.1 over time putting money into it gradually?

Would you be able to do a decent job setting up a 5.1 system if you got one?
Something like this

What are your sources going to be?
DVDs?
Games?
CD?
VCR?
Computer?

What % is it going to be music vs games/dvds?

How many sources are you hooking up? You want audio switching, but do you want video switching too?

Is this more of a Hometheater set, a computer oriented audio system, or a music playback system?

How big is the room / how far away would the speakers be?

Is this going to be optimized for just you listening, or is this more like a seating area for a few people that you're going for?

I think mainly what kind of sources you're hooking up is going to decide if a computer speaker system or a HT system would be best for you.

If you can get an onkyo 780 set going, I think that's generally a good idea. It has 5.1 input so you'll be able to hook up your computer via analog for games, will have a good amount of inputs for various sources, and the speakers are all bookshelf based so they're not too huge.

I dont rilly know what i would want more 2.1 or 5.1 5.1 sounds better lol. As for soruces if i where to get a reciver then one would be the computer for music and games. Would be like 95% music and 5% games then once i get some money ill just get a cd player so i dont have to use my computer. So it wouldent be a hometheater system. Bacily just a stereo system for by the computer that is hooked up to the computer also for music thats stored on the pc so i dont need computer speakers to if that makes cence. The room is about 30-35 feet by 15-20 feet about 9 foot celing, the room isent closed off thow has a door way to another room thats allways open if that matters. The room Is a pritty high traffic we have ppl over pritty offen and would be for other people to listen to also but mostly me.

Hope that helps

That's a pretty big room... and open to other areas too :Q

For a system that's 95% music I would suggest getting a 2.0 system or 2.1
Except for DVD-A, music is intended to be listened to in stereo. You can do 5.1 and do surround processing on it, but stereo is really where it's at for music listening.

Is this system going to be asked to fill the whole room with music for parties and such... or is this more of a personal music system?

If you're trying to fill up the whole room really loudly, I'd say go with a multichannel system and get speakers spread out through the room and do 5 channel stereo or something, but if you're trying to get higher quality for a smaller area then go with stereo.

For a multichannel system, I think an Onkyo 780 would still be a good bet for around $400 if you want to fill the whole room.

If you want to concentrate on a 2.1 system for yourself, I think a $150 to $200 receiver with option to add more speakers later if you want, a dayton sub and then some ELTs would get you better music quality than the HTIB set.

If you don't think you want a sub and think a 2.0 system would do, you could get away with a cheaper stereo receiver and put the bulk of your money into a better set of stereo speakers. Ascend 170s or Axiom m3tis?

As for paypal... I really don't know how versitile that is for a payment method. I've only used it for ebay myself. Any way to pay with credit card to expand your options? I don't know if any of the places I mentioned will accept paypal.

Wow, this one is missing a remote, but looks like you could get a nice HTIB going for cheap on ebay if you get a good deal ($100 shipping, but still only $240)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ONKYO-HT-S770-1000-...317QQcategoryZ1499QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

EDIT: Fluance also sells through ebay - I forgot about that.
You could pick up an SX-HTB set or AV-HTB set from ebay.
AV-HTB
SX-HTB
Those would have floorstanding fronts though... not sure if you'd want to go that route.

That's like half the size of the original specs you gave. Should be easier to fill that up

To make your life more confusing I'll mention that outpost has polk on sale again.

R30s @$50 each
R15s @$50/pair

I think overall ELTs plus a dayton sub is going to get you the most bang for your buck for personal music listening.

Ideally you'd be able to do some demo listening and decide for youself what sounded the best to you.

Parts express is vary close to where i live, Like 5 min drive so it would be nice to get stuff from there.

Those R15's look nice. So those and This sub?

So that would be 197.73 for speakers/sub (could go pick up the sub) So what would be a good receiver? Also the power rateing on those R15's? dosent say in the description.

That's a lot of sub for the money, good choice.

Polk recommends amplifiers of 20 to 100w per channel for the R15. They're 89dB efficient speakers with an 8 ohm nominal impedance. Going over the 100w power recommendation is absolutely fine. Generally, the problem is overdriving your amplifier, not providing too much power.

Info on the R15s power handling is 20 to 100watts they say.

For receiver there are plenty of options.
I'm going to steal some info I posted in another thread:

You probably can't go wrong with something from Onkyo/Denon/HK/Pioneer etc.

Some ones to check out:
HK AVR-135 (and similar) refurbs from the seller harmanaudio off ebay. There are factory refubs and they put a new 2 year warranty on them. I've ordered from them in the past
Denon units at ecost...
685
485
1705
etc
Onkyo units at ecost...
502
503
602
Pioneer
515 new from CC

Not sure if I got the best prices or not, but those are some ones to check out at least.
