Receiving errors while reformating

Hi everyone, reformating my friends emachine (sad it's an emachine!) anyways I'm recieving errors while reformating it. First I tryed to use this little restore utility thing, on his windows xp/emachine restore disks, and recieved the following errors when Norton Ghost opened

Cannot open R:\T1100.GHO

Cannot open GHOSTERR.TXT

Invalid dump file.. If this problem persists, contact Symantec Technical Support at http://service.symantec.com

So then boot his computer up from a win 98 boot disk, typed 'format c: /s' and 'format c: /s/u' and recieved this error 'bad command'. Booted from his restore disk again to dos, typed 'format C: /fs:ntfs' and recieved the same 'bad command' error.

Searched google didn't find any answers, was thinking of downloading that ultimatebootcd and trying to use some utility on there to whipe his hard drive clean, you guys think that will solve my problem? What utilitly/idea do you guys suggest? Thanks for any help.

FORMAT is not automatically included in the standard Windows 98 boot disk. That's probably the reason you are getting a "bad command" error.

The restore disk may be having a difficult time accessing the machine's hidden restore partition. If you run FDISK from the 98 boot disk, do you see such a partition?
