you don't need a law for this. if you want one parent to stay home, one parent will have to stay home and the family will have to make ends meet in other ways. my wife makes a lot more money than i was when we started having kids, so i ended up staying home with them. would life be easier with two incomes? hell yes it would. but we wanted to have a parent at home, so we make it work. i work on the weekend, she picks up odd jobs during tax season (she's a cpa) and we still manage to put our kids into private school.

So what if your wife was fired as soon as her employer found out she was pregnant?

I was reading more about the Family and Medical Leave Act, http://www.dol.gov/whd/fmla/index.htm. If I'm interpreting it correctly, employees have the right to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for specified medical reasons with pregnancy being one reason. So I suppose that as long as you can do your job up till the day you are about to give birth, then the employer cannot lay you off.

Pretty sure the FMLA doesn't kick in until 1 year at an employer.

She should just come clean to the employer on her first day.

Why is the United States the only country on this list without paid maternity/paternity? We are so far behind the world in this category it's not even funny.

Same reason we only have 6 "national holidays" left, because (most) employers just refuse to acknowledge the ones they deem unimportant.

Outside the US many countries have more generous worker benefits. Just like some countries shut down for 1 week+ at times. Pisses tourist americans off if they visit then.

Many advanced countries also give paid/subsidized paternity leave. I think thats a pretty good idea.

America currently doesn't have a problem making babies though. Now, when we start slowing down we'll become like Japan and give the working people time off to go have sex. But until then, we have plenty of new blood.
