what components would you recommend for :
video editing/capturing/photoshop maybe pinacle
gaming

i'm wanting to put together my own dream system

what i'm wondering about are video solutions. what would you recommend?
keyboard and mouse
speakers
soundcard
dvd
cdrw
ram amounts

looking at:
os: xp/98se dual boot or would 2000 pro be better?
processor will be p-,4 533 mhz fsb flavor when it arrives(unless the price is way overboard)
rdram
p4t-e probably
scsi boot drive/ide program drive
cdrw liteon 40x
dvd toshiba
rest not to sure about

i play a lot of games, creating movies for my family back home, ripping dvd's/cdrw's
but what i need or rather want is performance and sweetness

guess i am still lost on the rest and would appreciate any and all recomendations

thanks

dual processors =too expensive

my budget won't allow for duals unless i compromise speed considerably

also only a few applications i run are dual processor enabled

win 98se is for a few remaining games that won't run on xp

what i am looking for mainly is :
video solutions
keyboard and mouse
speakers
soundcard
dvd
cdrw
ram amounts

thanks again

Video card - GeForce 4 Ti (pick your flavor)
Keyboard - The cheapest keyboard with a full enter and backspace key.
Mouse - Logitech or Microsoft (both with the latest sensors) of whichever feels best.
Soundcard - Audigy or Santa Cruz
DVD - Lite On 16X (They are the fastest 16X)
CDRW - Lite On 32X (40X is really not needed)
RAM - 512 atleast
HD - Western Digital 120GB SE

<<Edit>> forgot something. Go with Win2k all the way. The games that wont play on XP will probably play on 2k so you wont even need to dual boot.

for 3500 you could go dual processors. just a thought.
yes 2k is MUCH better than 98. Trust us on this!

Why wont you consider amd, don't be scared, it's more bang for your buck.

do a search for similar questions you'll find lots of help.

I would still go with a dual boot XP/98SE or 2000/98SE cause there are alot of programs that will not run correctly still as well as have support for those apps or hardware.

It doesn't matter if you go with a P4 533fsb or the 400fsb cause it's easily overclockable to 533fsb anyway(just a 33Mhz overclock). If you want the performance, go with 512Megs RDram(2 sticks of 256Megs) and use the Abit Th7II board or the Asus PT4-E board.

Any reason you want to go scsi? The WD JB drives are parallel to performance to many scsi drives and would save money as well as provide more space.

CDRW Liteon looks good as well as Toshiba dvd.

If you want, there is a good kb and mouse combo on newegg from MS that costs next to nil.

Soundcard = either the Santa Cruz or the Audigy

Speakers = either the Logitech z560's or the Megaworks from Creative or the Klipsch promedias.

Video card = GF4 Ti4400, choose your brand but they're all pretty fast and this is the best deal for the hardware(and it's "available" now too unlike the 4200)

$3500 is alot and you don't have to spend that much. Don't go too high for speed on the P4 cause right now the 2G and above are not worth the price.

These are just suggestions but you can decide what is most important to you when making your purchase. This is what I would do if I was making a full system from the ground up.

wolfsraider,

With that $3500 do you plan on purchasing a video capture card like Pinnacle-One, or Matrox RT2500? Also does that budget include a video monitor for playback, an svhs deck for getting your final product to tape ?

Just curious, because if that's the case you may want to figure out those costs before you come up with your final "PC" budget.

Just a thought.

<< Why wont you consider amd, don't be scared, it's more bang for your buck. >>

yeah i guess i'm just very nervous mostly fron the stuff i read about at 2cpu.com.

<< For video, consider the Matrox RT2500 w/ Premiere 6.0 >>

between matroxrt2500 and pinacle dv500 plus which is better?

<< yes 2k is MUCH better than 98. Trust us on this! >>

ok then i will make this a 2000 98se dual boot!thanks

running scsi vs ide means able to multitask better and faster ?is it really not necessary?

look i've never had this kind of money to invest in a computer and i haven't a clue(pretty obvious isn't it) about what i need to buy and here's what i have now
p-4 1.5(my mates computer lol)256 rdram aiw radeon 32 ,sblive oem,8x4x32 matshushita cdrw,12x dvd,maxtor 40 gig 7200 rpm
photo shop 6.0
pinacle express
free d/l'd ripping capturing software
nero 5.5.5.6
ez cd creator 4.0
the monitor i have is a 1997 ncd 21 incher that does render beautiful images with bnc connectors

no.yes,no and that last one is new to me, ouch!

yes that is exactly what i am trying to figure out what is available and what is necessary so i can get a better idea

thanks for your suggestions and please help me decide what to look for and what's a more real budget for this?

Tyan Tiger MP would also be a good choice, unless your completly set on those 66mhz PCI slots and spending the extra $35 to get them. Personally, i dont even know of many cards in this segment that need 66mhz 64bit PCI slots.

Cygni,

I agree with the fact that most cards are don't really needd the 66MHz 64-bit slots. Unless he running a high end RAID system, they really won't be needed. However, there are other reasons to take the MPX over the MP:

1) The MPX is newer, meaning greater support and functionality.
2) The MPX is faster
3) The MPX supports 4GB (oppused to 3GB on the MP)
4) The MPX will support high end RAID, if he decides to go that route.
5) The MPX features integrated 3com 10/100 LAN. This saves money, and a PCI slot.

Now, I will admit that for the price-limited SMP user, the TigerMP offers great value and performance. However, I personally think that someone who is going all out should probably invest in the TigerMPX.

Wolf,

For the AthlonMPs, NewEgg is selling the retail version (3yr wrtny, included HSF) AthlonMP 1800+ for $180 shipped - a damn good price if you ask me.

For the mobo, I recomend a Tyan TigerMPX paired with an Adaptec 19160 for your nice 15k rpm system drive. For good prices on SCSI cards, check .here.

As far as RAM goes, I would take note of what EvilCON is using. I recomend you pikc up two 512MB sticks of ECC Registered Corsair PC2100 DDR.

For the video card, if you're doing 2D, I have to say the Matrox G550 - just don't expect to game on it. I have a GeForce3 and the visual quality is almost on par with my Matrox G450.

I have heard a lot about the Pro-ONE. You might want to head on over to VideoGuys and read some stuff, or give them a call - they are very helpful there. All I know is that my RT2000 has been great. The effects are outstanding, as is the I/O quality.

As far as cooling goes, I am the type where I simply throw in as many fans as the case will fit. Definetely get a extra-big case and atleast a 400 watt PSU. About the shims and CPU coolers, someone else could answer that much better than myself.

I think I've covered everything you asked. If you have any more questions, just let me know.

Good luck!
