Moving to a new home and both the living room and family room are wired for 7.1 surround sound as well as wired for outdoor speakers. I'm looking for a good receiver for the living room that will let me control it via an app on our phone, play music via the receiver natively, 4k support, and has dual zones so we can play music outside as well.

Any suggestions? The Yamaha RX-777BT looks like a good fit but I'm not sure if it would allow someone to watch TV in the living room while music plays outside simultaneously.

I'm also looking to get a nice 7.2 receiver for the family room that supports 4k, has plenty of power, and can be controlled via app.

Thanks!

I suggest separating the amp for the machine.

Get amps separately and then a good pre/pro. It'll knock the socks off of any all-in-one receiver.

Check out http://emotiva.com

Emotiva is a huge audiophile fave because the company gives extreme performance for the buck.

Use their E-club for an extra 10% discount.

BTW, they have 30 day auditions on their equipment.

The one I bought recently I didn't care about a phone, so I guess out of what you're doing really.

The wife even typing on her phone while watching a movie annoys me, but it is 1000+ watts.

Actually it does have Bluetooth so I'll through it up there, I doubt I'll use it myself personally, I'm not a phone person.

I think that is just for streaming though after looking at it again.

I don't have a particular model to recommend, but my Pioneer audio products have lasted the longest. I haven't had good luck with Sony products, but I also haven't bought one in decades. People seem happy with their Denons, not so much Onkyo, and I had a fairly new Panasonic die on me.

One important rule; give them plenty of airspace. My older Pioneer 7.1 says to give it 65cm on top and 40cm on the side.

I haven't kept up with the latest but normally receivers can't multitask.
Whatever source is selected will play from all the speakers.

Since you'll likely only listen to music on the patio you can build a separate system for that. Stereo receivers and CD players are cheap and you can locate them within range of the remote control.

with how good these portable bluetooth speakers sound now a days, i'd just get a portable speaker to bring outside to listen to music with.

when i had my patio redone, i had them run conduit to 2 spots outside to my garage so i could run speaker wire if i wanted to. but after hearing the sound of these $100+ bluetooth speakers, there is no reason i'll run speaker wire outside and keep 2 outdoor speakers when i can just get a portable speaker and bring it out there when i want to listen to music outside. just easier and more convenient, and probably cheaper in the long run.

just food for thought.

Most multi zone avrs will let you play music in one room while watching movie in another, atleast that's what their description says.

I understand your home is pre-wired, but are planning to buy speakers too? How much are you planning to spend all together?

For your patio, since you do you need video, a 2 channel amp should do the trick, you can find cheap ones on CL or accessories4less. That way you do not have to worry about the complexity of multi-zone and concentrate on a nive AVR for living room only.

I just prefer having one AVR in the main area myself, also.

I have some smaller amps, etc in other spots.

The last Sony AVR 5.1 I bought ran about 10 years, maybe I was just lucky but I liked it enough to buy a newer one that was similar and larger.

I have an odd ball collection of many things in the house, but I liked the last Sony AVR so well personally, I went there again I guess.

Just my opinion, I like mine, running out of an old Auzentech X-FI Prelude I had to even buy an adapter card for the main for over TOSLINK.

I like it at any rate.

I like that old sound card so much I had to, the P6T7 didn't have any PCI slots.

AUZEN X-FI PRELUDE 7.1-SCARD PCI

I still love that old thing.

I use the Multizone on my Yamaha Aventage all the time, for his exact use. I have a pair of speakers on the corners of my house for the patio. When I use Zone 2 it takes the two channels that drive the Rear speakers to drive the patio speakers which reduces my Theater to traditional 5.1 when zone 2 is used. Also zone 2 is used in the bar/pool table area to drive a LCD TV and a pair of speakers in there also.

I still have a PC with a Xonar DS, all channel analog outputs go into a old AVR's multi-in/DVD-in. and the AVR just works as a amplifier. Works great!
