Recommend a device with a good keyboard for filling out patient forms.

My parents run a small medical clinic and want to move to electronic patient records. They need a small device to give to patients to fill out an electronic patient form (your typical info, like name, DOB, address, reason for visiting, etc).

Most of the patients are going to be 40+ years old and probably not computer savvy.

Because of the demographic, a single iPad or tablet in which input is via a touchscreen is out of the question.

We also need a device with a good keyboard - a Microsoft Surface with one of their zero-travel keyboards wouldn't be a good fit.

I also want a good IPS screen.

- Budget is $350
- Ultrabook-sized or smaller
- Are there any Windows laptops on there that fit this bill?
- I was also considering the Toshiba Chromebook 2 - IPS 1080p display, good keyboard, 3lb - but I'm wary of the system limitations and honestly $350 for Chrome in an ultrabook is kinda high.

For this purpose you should also consider a form of backup in your budget. Since the files will be small size, a DVDRW will be good enough, unless you already have an external disk.

When the forms get submitted they are stored on a secure cloud storage with automatic backups.

Interesting. I'm concerned by a few things though:

- The screen appears to be really bad quality and viewing angles are horrible

- 2GB of RAM on 64-bit Windows 8.1? Uhhhh....

I'm not sure either of these particularly matter for your use case. I mean, if you were using it as a display for your photography customers to look through images, that'd be one thing. For forms, I think it's a who cares.

As for the memory, that'll only matter if you're running something moderately memory intensive. What kind of software are the forms on? If it's HTML-based, you should be fine.

When the forms get submitted they are stored on a secure cloud storage with automatic backups.

That takes care of my bigger concern, which was storage space.

My dentist uses an iPad. Not recommending an iPad, but the fact that the software for electronic medical/patient forms runs fine on it suggests that maybe it would also do the same on an Android based solution as well. And my dentist has plenty of older patients as well (I'm ~50).

The software provider of the electronic patient forms make a recommendation?

I would not touch a computer used by other patients. It's like begging to catch something. Yes, I bring my own pen when I visit the doctor.

^^This. In addition to providing for privacy (no way for one patient to see what other patients already entered, you'll need a way to scrub input to keep patients from crapping up your database.

Quite frankly, it strikes me as an attempt to save on the expense of hiring adequate office staff by imposing data entry work onto patients.

Honestly though, I would rather sit at a desk or what have you and input the information myself. No need to deal with the hassle of showing someone how to use it and I can also be sure if the integrity and completeness of the data entered.

Systems like this are cool and trendy but I find that handing someone an iPad and telling them to put their shit in often takes longer than If I or an employee were to just do it.

Hiring an 18 year old temp at minimum wage seems like the better solution, and you can have them do other things as well.

I also forgot to mention HIPPA compliance^^^
