I'm looking for a good 4 port router since the post office just lost my netgear router order . They don't sell the one i wanted anymore, the Netgear rt314 so i'm looking for any suggestions on routers.

Thx!

I think many people, including myself, will vouch for the Linksys BFSR41. Easy to set up, and a lot of options. They often update firmware too.

Netgear RT314 was actually made by Zyxel. The original is Zyxel P314
and you can buy it direct
here.
P314 and RT314 are hardware identical, only case is different.

I have it and it works great. Zyxel continues to develop new firmware for it packing more features.
You can find a ton of info on this Netgear/Zyxel forum.

Most stable ones I've used are Netgear RT314 and RP114 (the one I'm using now) and D-Link DI-704. A new version, DI- 704P has a built-in print- server and is the same as the SMC barricade (same OEM).

I've been using Linksys BFSR41 for some time now and haven't had any problems at all. Cheap, small, quiet and very reliable.

I'm not going to try buying over the net again so my options are basically from netgear, linksys, dlink, us robotics and smc.

Randum, does the Dlink router come with like these rubber things you can put around them or something like that? I saw that in a picture once but don't know if that's the one.

Another vote for the linksys, easy setup, no problems so far. I don't know if these features are standard on all of these, but it comes with a built in firewall, and goes up to 100 for networking besides the standard 10 for broadband. It's not too expensive either, and definately available (at least around here) since you said you wanted to buy retail.

Jo Palm, the routers with the 'rubber thingies' around them are, I think, Linksys. What I like about the D-link and Netgear routers are that they have metal casings (although I think the newer D-links have plastic cases) and have longer warranties compared to Linksys. My experience with Linksys has not been very good (probably they are better now but it left a bitter taste in my mouth). Check practicallynetworked.com for reviews on routers and feedback from users.

Thanks for the linky Randum! Gonna check it as soon as i can! Leaning towards the dlink 704p cause of the printer port.

For those with the Dlink 704p router, is it easy to host a game server behind it?

If you have extra money to burn, get the DI-714. This 4 port router is also a cable router and includes a 802.11b wireless connections also. Firmware is upgradable. Works pretty good as my network.

I would think that possibly Amazon.com may have the best price on certain Linksys items. Check them out. You may be surprised.

I have a D-Link 704 and have never had a problem, just thought I'd let you know. I normally have 2 computers hooked up to it, but I have had 4, worked just fine.

I have a DLink-704 myself, but I think most people are going to find that the differences between DLink, Linksys, Netgear, and SMC are very minimal.

was not bad 2 NICs and BFSR41 $70

Tech support is OK 24/7 I think..

I've used both the Linksys BFSR11 and 41 ( for my personal network and installed 4 for customers as firewalls) and the SMC Barricade, haven't had a lick of trouble with either one. Right now I'm using the Barricade as it has a built-in print server, a very nice feature. I'd give both a thumbs up!

A few months ago I checked out 4-port routers, read all the reviews, etc. I ended up with the Linksys BEFSR41, for many of the reasons already stated by others.

i would agree and say that the linksys is very good. can be had for about $100 (i think, don't quote me) at like staples or bb, or probably cheaper online. i bought the dlink that was on sale about a month ago, for $50 after rebates, which is a steal. it was easy to setup and i have had zero problems with it.

[edit] i can't run game servers with my dlink... cuz of the firewall.

if you definiteyl want one of the best routers, the SMC barricade 7004br (older model, they have a newer one out now). they have them at compusa and they are one of the best you can buy.

if you need any info on networking stuff, www.practicallynetworked.com is probably the best site.
