I'm looking for a ASDL modem or modem/router to use with AT&T DSL (NOT U-verse). A chat with AT&T said any ADSL would work with their system and a few were listed:

 • Motorola 3360
 • Netgear DGN 2200

 • Netgear DGND3700
 • Netgear 6200
 • Netgear 7550
 • Pace 4111N
I was told that you should always stay with Broadcom chips but have no idea if any of these have them or not. I currently have AT&T's Netgear 7550 which has a modem issue and their Pace 4111N which has an issue of having to be unpluged & plugged back in a lot. I do not want to purchase another 7550 or 4111N.

1. What are your thoughts using a modem only vs a modem/router?

2. As a modem/router do you think the Netgear DGND3700 would be a good compromise for price & performance?

3. Is there a good modem only ADSL you would recommend that I could possibly with the Netgear's 7550?

Netgear DGN2200, DGND3700 and D6200 (there are other *6200 products which are not modems) are all Broadcom-based.

Wikidevi has this information for most networking products, just google wikidevi brand model. Look these models up, you will see their CPU is BCM63... (various incarnations, commonly referred to as bcm63xx in the third party firmware world). BCM63xx are Broadcom System-on-a-Chip (SoC) with DSL modems. BCM47xx are Broadcom SoCs without modems, e.g. your standard wireless router product.

Some devices have internally separate modem and router, look at e.g. Asus DSL-AC68U (BCM47xx router SoC + Mediatek DSL modem).

I've used a Cisco 1841 with a WIC-1ADSL for years without issue. 100% flawless.

That's not exactly consumer equipment. Granted you can pick them up off eBay for as much as most consumer grade pieces of equipments nowadays. However the op would have to learn some level of IOS in order to set it up properly.

To the op, I do still recommend Cisco where possible for ADSL routers. I no longer have ADSL (cable modem now) but when I did I had a Cisco DSL modem and that thing was rock solid the entire time I had the service. I would look for a Cisco 870 series like this one on eBay.

Nasafreak I emailed the seller you linked to and got back:
"As it turns out this router would not be good for AT&T DSL - this is primarily used for medium to large sized offices. You would also need a network engineer to set it up. We would recommend a Netgear modem/router."

Have you thought about putting any of these modems into bridged mode and running a basically any other home router behind it?

I have been running a Actiontec C1000A (Broadcom based) in a bridged mode for about 2 years and the only hiccup I have had was when my first modem up and died after about 2 months.

If you are willing to put in the effort to learn some Cisco-y things I would vote for a Cisco box as well. Bigger learning curve but you really do get a lot more reliability out of something in that class.

I would have went that route but vDSL wics seem to still be fairly expensive.
