Nexus 7 at $200. Anything else cheaper really isn't worth it considering how vastly superior the Nexus 7 is for probably not much more.

I second the Nexus 7. You can't beat it for $200. You'll also get a few more years worth of Android updates.

OK, at the risk of getting flogged, I got a Uniden (Chinese) 7" tablet for my son for Christmas. It works well; has Ice Cream Sammich on it, 1gb memory, 4gb internal storage, and a microSD slot (I threw a 16gb sd in it that I had laying around). He watches Youtube junk on it, Netflix, and plays a bunch of games he got out of Google Play.... $59.... And it does it all fairly well... Don't know how long it will last

Get the $249 version, with 32GB (you can find refurbished units for less than $200 at times).

One of my daughters got a Fire for Christmas, and I was sort of leaning that way for a cheapy tablet. The Nexus 7 looks better, but why does it have such a wide bezel top and bottom? Looks to me like the Fire has about half that much.

The FireHD looks comparable in terms of bezel, but the regular Fire indeed has smaller bezels.

It may be one of those engineered that way but sold as "we designed it this way for you!" reasons, but I suspect it truly was a user experience decision. They claimed bezel size and all aspects of its shape were designed with the user in mind.

I definitely recommend the Nexus 7, I love it. And for how I use it, I've simply kept to the stock Android experience, updating as they are pushed. It is now a few versions beyond my Galaxy Nexus (which I'm holding out for a snapshot or RC of CyanogenMod 10.1 (4.2), as I don't want nightlies and just want the holy grail instead of the other mods, like the older AOKP release I have now).

My Nook magazine subscriptions are on it, I read Kindle books on it, I use it for Google Currents/feed reader, and browse the web a bit. It serves me great during extended reserve training when will play games on it and my PC is obviously not with me.

A rooted NookHD/FireHD might not be a bad idea either, but the internals of the Nexus7 should have a small lead, and you don't need to do anything to unlock the awesomeness.

If the main reason is for comics, I think Fire HD or Nook HD are also contenders. Both Amazon and B&N also make an inexpensive 9" tablet.

I would say the N7 is the best budget tablet, but the Kindle Fire does deserve some consideration if you're looking for something closer to $150. It's not really a slouch.

Nexus 7. It's an awesome tablet.

Stock Android is also far better than whatever Amazon and B&N put on their tablets.

I was going to mention the Uniden Android tablet for $59 but it's probably out of stock everywhere except for some remote truck stop in New Mexico.

Another vote for the Nexus 7.

I have a Kindle w/e-ink for reading, and I'm pretty sold on that, but I want a tablet to test apps on. Or at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Dunno what obscure titles OP may read, but the Nook store seems to have a much better graphic e-novel selection than Amazon.

Of course, Nexus gets you both, as does rooting.

I'll be the one to break the consensus here by saying Nexus 7.

It really is hard to beat for $200. I wouldn't trust any of the cheap Android tablets below that, and there aren't any tablets from Apple or Win RT/8 at that price point, so it makes the decision relatively easy.
