Or even at this point wait for a 2nd generation Nexus 7 which is sure to have Tegra 4 and a 7" 1920x1200 screen.

Unless he's buying it mainly for gaming, i dont see a reason to wait? What can't the current nexus 7 do that will require an upgrade anytime soon? Movies, internet, maps, bluetooth, wifi, camera, its all there. There's no reason to upgrade unless ure a hardcore gamer, but then why would a gamer buy a tablet??

The reason to wait is mainly for a higher resolution screen. It will just have Tegra 4.

Ok, I'm gonna get a nexus 7, would you trust getting one off ebay if the seller had good rep?

Buy it from EBay. 32gb N7 is frequently on sale for ~$225 new from reputable sellers/stores with free shipping and no tax.

Google Play Store is the worst place to buy anything. Google charges for 2 day shipping and tax while charging full retail. I can't believe Rossman suggested buying direct from Google. I can't think of colder deal.

I have to say, these look PRETTY impressive!

http://www.ainol-novo.com/buy-products.html

Like nearly all Chinese no-name tablets, the battery life is awful, the screen (even advertised as "IPS") is mediocre, its pretty thick and the most ridiculous thing is the processor. The "quad-core" in it is slow (promised to be a Cortex-A9, but it looks like that was a typical Chinese Tablet lie), and the graphics processor is pretty much a hearkening back to the original Nook Color days. Its incredibly underpowered.

People have pretty much told you over and over again that the Nexus 7 is pretty much *the* entry point into the tablet market. And even then, I personally wouldn't buy a used one due to all the defective ones (I've been through 5, mostly due to screen lift). However, I would take my chances on a used Nexus 7 waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before I ever considered one of these awful Chinese tablet. There is no good Chinese brand tablet. This is pretty much 100% universal. I can not think of one single tablet from a Chinese company that was any good at anything other than being a paperweight.

Meh, I have an original Ainol Nova Aurora 7. It's good for what it is, but go into such a thing knowing that it isn't going to be great. I bought it cause I had no idea if i had enough use for a tablet or would even want one. As people have said, the battery life of these things isn't great, but surprisingly not as bad as they'd try to make you believe... I've been on 8 hour train or bus rides watching videos the whole time without issues at all, but gaming eats the battery like no other.

I'll go with everyone else, the Nexus 7 is cheap enough to be a good entry to the tablet market (when I bought my Nova 7 the only other options were 10 inch at $400+). If the Nexus were out when I bought mine, I would have went with the Nexus 7...

I haven't touched the thing since we got my wife's ipad 4 last month... and I generally dislike apple products... so that tells ya how much I enjoy using the Nova 7 comparatively.

So cliffs... ya get what ya pay for... but my experience with Ainol has been great (build quality, battery life, and quality in general) BUT... I say great because of the price, not so much the product (having gotten something better, I haven't touched it in over a month, and have no desire to touch it anytime soon).

I'm convinced NEXUS 7 it is...any chance they will drop below $199 any time soon?

I'm pretty sure it's not going to go lower than that - the profit margins are probably really tight at $199 considering what you're getting (Tegra 3, 1280x800 IPS screen, etc.)

As for buying them used, you might be able to find a used 8GB for somewhat lower, though a lot of the early Nexus 7s had screen-lift issues. My early build one has some minor screen lift, though it's not that annoying.

Much to ROSSMAN's surprise, I JUST picked up a Nexus 7 from Staples and saved the $14 shipping fee from GooglePlay...

Still in box, will mess with it after work...

Me, I'd pick up a refurbed 10.1" Galaxy Tab 2 from Wallyworld for $280. A 7" tablet is, to me, a bad joke. My mother in law has the Kindle Fire and you couldn't give me the thing. I have no doubt the Nexus 7 is a better device, but it's still 7".

You can pocket a 7-8" tablet in a coat or jacket.

OMG the end is near, he actually bought one before my prediction (what was it 6 months?).

I love being proved wrong.
