On monday I gave my girlfriend a 52X24x48 Aopen CD Buner. We painted the front black to match her case, installed it, and then heard it!

Her Dell is nice and quiet and she would like to keep it that way. Anyone who is up to date on all the different burners out there have a suggestion on a burner that does not scream ?

Thanks, Brian

I have a 16x Lite-on cdburner on this machine, and it is very quiet.

The noise problem isn't very important during the burning process, but rather when playing a cd, installing a program...etc it needs to be quiet!

Either the Plextors as mention or Yamaha's are quiet if you can find 1 as they are quitting the CDRW Optical business even though they make quality CDRW's and have the DiscT@2. Another option is if she has USB2.0 or you can add a Card and then use a that Burner at a distance

I have a Toshiba SD-R1312 DVD/CDRW drive and I have to say it's absolutely awesome in all respects, provided you use quality discs. I mean stuff like TDK etc, not Smartbuy. If Smartbuy is inserted, it starts to sound quite loud from vibration, but dead silent with TDK and other quality media.

On a side note, absolutely the best drives I ever used were from NEC. I had a NEC NR-7500A CDRW burner, and I swear it was a paragon in all respects. I regret I sold it. It read everything, even discs with holes in them. It never made any audible noise no matter which disc inserted. It never spoiled a single CDR. It absolutely had no single issue, except that it couldn't work as a master on the second channel of the VIA KT133A chipset. Oh boy do I miss that drive... Yes I do. My current Toshiba is a POS compared to that NEC.

My last 2 LG burners (15X and 52X) and readers (52X) have been as quiet as my 40X Plextor reader. The 52X burner is very capable - just make sure you update the firmware.

My experience

12x Liteon CDRW <---- Average
12x LG Combo CDRW/DVD <---- Quiet
16x Liteon DVD ROM <---- Noisey!
24x Sony <--- Eh, it's average

Heard Samsung suppose to the quietest.

Here's a deal for one + reviews.
