I play Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion. Neverwinter Nights 2. That's all I play right now.

Can anyone recommend a good strategy game?

The ones on my list are MM6, COH2, and Anno. Can anyone recommend those 3 games or other strategy games that are worth buying and playing?

Past favorite multiplayer online has been Battle for Middle Earth 2, Dawn of War 2, Endless Space, and European Escalation 1 and 2. I also loved World of Battles. The Warhammer figs and gameplay kept me interested for over a year.

I was thinking of trying Chivalry Medieval Warfare or Mount and Blade. My real interest is in strategy games but a good shooter that is not "top of the charts"(CoD BF4) could grab my gaming dollar.

XCOM Enemy Unknown/Within

I had a lot of fun playing this for a weekend. The chess multiplayer game play was not my style. Im a big fan of team game play without as much tabletop accuracy.

Ill check the other game out Majesty 2. Is there players for the game? Might and Magic 6, CoH2 and Anno look very interesting. The game play is probably very complicated.

Lets see.

Warhammer 40,000 Retribution (more RPG & squad based then DoW but I still call it a RTS)

Men of War (great if you like micromanagement hell)

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (getting a bit old but you can't beat the scale)

Wargame: Airland Battle / European Escalation

Total War series, pick your flavor

Majesty 2 (very unique RTS, good change of pace)

Stronghold 1/2 (some medieval strategy fun, though I'm not sure if they fixed all the bugs in #2)

Dune 2000 / Total Annihilation (oldschool RTS classics, see gog.com for TA)

Planetary Annihilation (made by the people who made TA, not finished yet, will go down in price, battle on 3D planets with all sorts of toys)

Homeworld 1/2 (my favorites, hard to get now BUT it's currently being "remastered" with higher textures/better models/improved audio/bug fixes. Must buy when it comes out on steam, maybe on gog.com )

You could always try the classics: Age of Empires and its expansions and Age of Mythology. Maybe something in the Command and Conquer Series, I like the Generals games and C and C 3 was pretty good. Went downhill after that. BTW, I loved BFME 2 online as well.

For shooters, you could try Borderlands 1 or 2 and the Metro series (Metro 2033 and Metro LL). Personally, I liked 2033 more, while Metro LL seemed more consolized somehow. But either was leagues ahead of the single player component of the latest COD or BF games.

Master of Orion 2.
If you've played it vanilla, play it with this mod. It rearranges the tech tree, makes the later techs cost a LOT more, beefs up leaders, alters the costs of picks a little, and gives the AI much better picks.

Appreciate the input. A lot of suggestions. The Planetary Total Annihilation could be a buy but my price point spot is around $40 or $50. I read about Planetary. Group of private game designers came up with it. Hope the game lives up to the hype. Dawn of War 2 was amazing. A slightly larger scale would have been my flavor but it the balancing was excellent. No popular multiplayer fantasy games that I know of. A few I saw on steam looked very good but the time investment is a big commitment for any serious purchase.

Any players of Anno, Might and Magic 6 or CoH2?

CoH2 is a can't go wrong buy but how good (I'm sure there are some threads here I can read) and how is the learning curve. It takes about a year to hit the "hobby" level in a good strategy game. Endless Space was a blast but the learning curve was steep and even the best games have a lifespan of 4-5 years.

Galactic Civilizations 2
Total War series

If you like the Warhammer universe, there's Blood Bowl, a decent little tactical game.

If you want a short RPG, Shadowrun.

So how is Sins of a Solar Empire as a whole? I've been looking for an RTS to play (excited to hear that we're going to get HD Homeworld this year, as I never got to play it, beyond a few hours). The RTS genre as a whole seems to have died out, which sucks. I was hoping to get a game during the Holiday Sale, but couldn't find one. Almost got C&C, but I won't install Origin because EA sucks.

I didn't like Majesty 2 at first, but it really grew on me. It's a fun game, and a few of the scenarios are quite challenging.

Of course - if you haven't beaten Alpha Centauri on one of the upper difficulty levels you haven't really played strategy.

I haven't played one of the 3 in your list but your favs I can understand. I'd say try fallen enchantress, a turn based strategy along the lines of endless space, but in a fantasy setting with more interesting combat and really just a fair bit better than endless space (which i did enjoy a lot for like two weeks solid play).

My friend really speaks highly of mount and blade. The chivalry thing is an updated version of a really old cs mod. I don't care for it that much even compared to a traditional fps (with guns instead of swords/bows), but know someone who likes it.

Rise of Nations is the best RTS game of all time IMO. Very deep gameplay elements and a combat design that discourages micromanaging and encourages strategy over tactics.

The best turn-based strategy game of all time would be Civilization 4 (Beyond the Sword) of course.

I second starcraft 2
SC2 is amazing. It's not only great to play but the learning aspect is very entertaining as well. Watching professional players is not only educational, but VERY enjoyable.

disclaimer: It is the ONLY game that can make me so mad that it requires "breaks"

My current favorite is an oldie, but a goodie, L4D2. Its part strategy and part FPS. The team dynamic is fun, more casual, but can be time consuming (each game is over an hour long). Great replay value.

It's a great game. It's a slower-paced RTS with 4x elements that offers deep strategy and tactics, and it is far from being an APM-based clickfest. It even has competitive online multiplayer PvP, which is where the strategy and tactics really get fleshed out. Sadly, it's overlooked for online multiplayer PvP. It would be a good buy for $10 at a Steam sale.

I would avoid Planetary Annihilation at this time, it very basic and the AI is not challenging at all. This could change in the future but right now its not that great.
I picked up airland battle haven't played much but its pretty good so far

Civ5 with G&K and BNW expansions. I've probably surpassed my BG2 playtime with this game by now

Oh and almost forgot Panzer Corps from Slitherine. If you liked Panzer General from the 90s you'll love this remake with tons of extra campaigns.
