So I'm not a fancy guy but a relative wants to buy me an heirloom watch, something I'd pass on to my kids. His max budget is $3k, suggestions? I like the look of tag heuer and omegas but, again, i know nada about watches.

This makes me seem really spoiled, but I assure you I'm not a bling kinda guy.

**update**
sorry for the long delay, just got back from torneaue, purchased a vintage omega seamaster in fantastic condition with a 2 year warranty - woot! I noticed an engraving that they need to buff out (or replace the backing), can't wait! My dad also brought along a zenith from his personal collection that they will be refurbishing and handing over to me, which is exciting since I've loved the watch since I was a kid. i honestly would have been happy with just that, but I'm learning not to turn down nice things, because I'm just renting them until I hand them over to my kids. The most ironic thing is that I'm scared to wear either on the NYC subway so will be locking them up and just ordered a $15 used HMT watch to wear as my daily driver, made in india like him.

Purchased used omega or rolex. Do some research to make sure you arent getting a knock off. You can get a $5000 watch for $2500 if you buy slightly used. Remember to budget for maintenance. About $500 every 7 years.

apple watch.

When you pass it on to your kids they can laugh at it. And then eventually in 100 years if it still works, it will be a collector's item like that apple computer that an old lady tried to recycle that was worth $200k

Breitling is my preference, Navitimer in particular. You can find them used for well within your budget.

$3K is not a sufficient budget for a "heirloom" watch.

Michael

Depends on the point of the heirloom. Is it to appreciate in value? Then you'll want to spend a lot. Is it for sentimental reasons? Then the overall expense doesn't really matter. I have a $200 watch that means more to me than a fancy Rolex because it was a wedding gift with an inscription from my Godmother. It's not going to be worth a thing in 100 years, but that doesn't really matter to me; it's the memory that matters, not the price tag.

Yup, preowned Datejust.

They go for significantly more than $3k even pre-owned. I was looking at some pre-owned Rolex watches for my wife not too long ago and the cheapest they had were twice that. They were really in mint condition though, very nice watches sold at an authorized Rolex dealer.

Depends on the year.

You don't have to wait 100 years. It's worth nothing now.

Ha, I'm first generation - my people don't have white people legacy money

All kidding aside, I think he wants it expensive enough to leave an impression and not be thrown away, though i wouldn't throw away a $50 watch if the thought was there. Honestly, I like fossil watches a lot!
