If you want to go under that then something like a hamilton could be up your ally.

http://www.hamiltonwatch.com/

Beautiful watch! I'll be blunt, we're ..well.. ethnic.. and he's old school, so I think brand name matters to him (not really me, I turned down the offer the first time he made it) - is hamilton considered a "name?"

P.s. I really like the german/swiss stainless submarine watch look, if that helps.

Ha, I'm first generation - my people don't have white people legacy money

All kidding aside, I think he wants it expensive enough to leave an impression and not be thrown away, though i wouldn't throw away a $50 watch if the thought was there. Honestly, I like fossil watches a lot!

Browse Tourneau, lots to choose from in the preowned category.

find a watch you like in that price range is your best option. I bought a planet ocean because I like watches with a rubber band.

sky's the limit - to some, a $3000 watch still ain't shit. So go with something that's timeless and not a fad.

Lets go get them.

Sure, just for the value, they are way too small for my liking. That is one reason I got rid of my Rolex, the 36mm dial just stopped being my taste. Now my smallest is 48mm, but now a days, I don't wear higher end watches.

apple watch.

When you pass it on to your kids they can laugh at it. And then eventually in 100 years if it still works, it will be a collector's item like that apple computer that an old lady tried to recycle that was worth $200k

I doubt it. The reason the Apple I computer is valuable is because only 200 of them were made. They'll probably make a million of those silly watches, which makes it more like a Commodore 64 than an Apple I. You can find those in eBay for pretty cheap.

Peoples perceptions of a fancy watch is pretty crazy. To some people a $200 watch is luxury.

yes yes, my point is, his "I wants it to be expensive enough to leave an impression" rational could be very misguided.

i only have sub-$200 quartz watches, and no set timeline to pop my automatic cherry, even though i have some in sight.

I'm kind of leaning toward getting a Rolex for myself. I want to get my wife a nice watch first though... maybe for our Anniversary in September.

Don't be afraid to look on ebay, plenty of dealers sell them there with great reputations. I know there is a dealer that even has a store in Anaheim.

I bought mine from these guys is 1994.

I just don't trust families these days with heirlooms. Kids will probably hock it or lose it before the body turns cold.

Its a name but its not rolex or omega or any of the esoteric brands. But you were asking for cheaper and they are cheaper but still quality.

So I'm not a fancy guy but a relative wants to buy me an heirloom watch, something I'd pass on to my kids. His max budget is $3k, suggestions? I like the look of tag heuer and omegas but, again, i know nada about watches.

This makes me seem really spoiled, but I assure you I'm not a bling kinda guy.
Savings bond/college fund. These days, a watch is just jewelry. Your kids will have implants telling them the time.

I sold my Rolex for $3k, so yes you can.

There is a difference between buying retail and selling something to a retailer. Markups are significant. Just go to one of those websites for cars and look at the difference. Jewelry is the same, only much more so.

Many years ago, a guy asked my brother if he wanted to buy a watch. Knowing that this guy sold hot merchandise at a third the price of retail, my brother said he might be interested. He told my brother to find someone wearing a watch he liked, and to point him out. The guy said that he would then go get it for him.

I am not exactly sure what your point is. I am saying you can buy a Rolex for $3k, not stolen, not fake, etc etc. You just have to know your watches, do your homework.

https://www.breitling.com - find something that you like.

I only have a few very nice watches, but I have about 20 different Skagens. I love them. Thin enough to comfortably fit under a cuff, light enough for everyday wear.

Go grave robbing in an 'old america' area. Anything made now at that price won't be timeless or maintain worth. Plus it will be a good family team building exercise

Yeah, I think what I value over "luxury!$$!!" is timeless simplicity (I'm big into dieter ram) and just craftmanship. I'd much rather have something well made than something ornate.

I'm half assed about this because I think it's silly, but I see where he's coming from and want to respect that - and pass it on as from their grandad (to my favorite, duh).
