Always feel guilty because their markups like 200% and I'll always find a better deal online, so I'm just touching their merchandise. I'm looking at that Rolex and I can't help but think that the lowest-end watches from famous watch manufacturers look pretty damn similar. I'm fairly sure my £15 Lorus would carry on working for the rest of my days, so what's the attraction to spending that (Rolex) sort of money...

Have you thought about Cartier? Elegant watches and are timeless. The ones built 50 years ago still look amazing. You have to like that look. They are different than your typically dive watches.

I would tend to avoid tudor/off brand and omega. They are not hand me down watches. You can make a case for Omega maybe but you might as well get a Breitling or Rolex in that range. They hold value.

I have a Tag now. Great watch. Quartz(I don't like automatics) But I would never spend more than 800 on a tag. If you are going to go full budget you have to go big name

I don't get this reference? And, just FYI, (quality) office furniture is ridiculously overpriced. My desk consists of three (large) modular pieces and a rolling file cart. Modern and sleek design, solid wood construction, white/wood/aluminum. Retail price is $14k. I know a US distributor, so I get amazing deals.

The thing about a Rolex though is that band and case, if gold is solid gold. The diamonds are real diamonds and everything about a Rolex is PERFECT! And if you wear it regularly you never have to do anything to it. It should keep perfect time.

You would want to get it serviced and cleaned periodically but that's it.

Plus, it is instantly recognizable. Rolex=Luxury/Power/Success/Money. It's not just a watch, it's a statement.

Uhh, if it is actual gold, then it is a VERY soft metal. And if it's a soft metal, you would probably need to have it maintained. There are plenty of other metals that do not need regular maintenance. That sounds like a pain in the ass.

I'd take the watch, sell it for $2k and replace it with a cheap Chinese knockoff for $25. Neither your relative or your kids would know the difference.

Well, you don't buy a Rolex because you need a watch to tell time accurately. It is a luxury item. What you're basically saying is that nobody should buy a Ferrari because a Corolla will do the same job.

The nicest watch I own is a $250 Citizen (that I NEVER wear) but I'm kind of toying with the idea of buying a nice watch. I work with a guy who wears a $5,000 Bremont every day and I find myself admiring the quality and look of his watch.

Think of it this way, what does a $200 watch (or a $15 watch) say about you?
