So even since my last few watches have either failed on the band or the face, I haven't worn a watch in over a year. But for some reason I just like having something there. Chalk it up to wearing one for so long, it just makes your arm feel naked without a watch on it.

That said, instead of just getting whatever I can find locally I've decided to find something I know I'll really like.

My criteria for a new watch are:
-$100-$350 price range
-No batteries, must be kept going by motion
-Either VERY water resistant or better yet, water proof

I like a more simplistic, metallic face. I don't want digital, and if possible something that gives you the day/month on it as well as the time. I'd like a circular face and a normal sized face, I'm not a fan of these HUGE faces and I don't like the skinny watches either.

For looks, something like these would be a good starting point :

Does such a watch exist, or is something like the motion killing me in the price department?

Unfortunately, most of the watches you linked seem to be chronographs... and an automatic (movement) chronograph will be pretty pricy.

If you would also consider dive watches, I'd take a look at something like the Mako:

If you're not dead set on a chronograph, a Seiko 5 is always a good option. Reliable automatic movement, lots of styles, and quite affordable. Most models will show date and day of week, though not month.

Oh, I'm not set on how it keeps time, I posted those for just how they looked.

Does it have to be motion powered, or just not battery?

How about this Citizen Eco-drive Calibre 8700? It's powered by a solar cell that recharges a capacitor inside. $277 at Newegg. There are other colors too.

If you like something with even simpler face, Citizen 7080 might fit the bill. It has titanium body and bracelet, sapphire crystal, and eco-drive as well. Titanium and sapphire at this pricepoint is pretty amazing. I wish it had perpetual calendar though. $178 at Newegg

i was in the same boat a little while ago. i went with a Hamilton khaki field watch.

it is in the price range you are talking about, is self winding, and is water resistant to 330 ft. it is 42mm across so it isn't too bulky. the brown leather band is very well crafted. my only gripe is that the polished stainless bezel around the front crystal is easily scratched.

Get a fossil. Lot of good choices all from $85 to $200. I love fossil watches, though I'm sure there are haters on here for them.

I don't think Fossil will have anything that's an automatic nor meets the water resistance requirements.

I'd also suggest looking at the Orient Mako - a very popular watch for people looking for bang-for-the-buck. Tons of reviews online if you do a quick search. (If you do go with Orient, make sure you look for their current coupons)

Dont waste your money on an auto in that price range--especially not an auto chrono. I have a Certina DS Prince with the Valjoux 7753 movement. Its a very affordable watch, but significantly outside of your price range. For an auto chrono, i would not spend less than $800. That being said, there are cheap autos out there which you will hear about in this thread. If you are going to buy a cheap auto, at least make sure it has an ETA 2892.

Do you like round styling more or rectangular?
If you mean the face, I prefer round.

I've had Fossil watches before, no complaints about them other than they don't last longer. Either the face breaks, the battery needs replacing (which I know isn't that hard to do, it's just the hassle I want to do without).

I'm digging the Citizen styling, but I guess I should clarify my "auto" comment. I'd like to get a watch that self winds just by your movement (not self-winding by a nob you have to manually turn). What is the watch lingo for that anyways?

Round face styling, ok. What are your reasons for not liking battery powered watches? I myself own and wear everyday a Seiko Quartz 3003 from 1975. I have no issues with the battery so far. I although I am a bit weary of trying to test its water proofness. lol

I think all the watches these days will be self winding by movement or light, I don't think you will find a manually winding watch that readily, you should not have to worry about that, those are antique or collectors items. Go with citizen you wont regret, I have two. I love watches and I have close to 20, about 7 of them fall in the category you are looking at and my favorites are the Citizen!
