I was thinking about getting 'The Witcher' and giving that a try, but am still on the fence. I'll probably wait till it drops in price a bit. From what I read it seems like a good game, but not what I'm looking for. Games I really like are, Panzer Dragoon Saga (favorite - Sega Saturn game, probably not too many fans of it here), old D&D style RPG's for PC/Sega Genesis/Sega CD, Divine Divinity was decent, Skies of Arcadia (anyone play that one on the Dreamcast?), the Lunar series (Sega CD), Vay (Sega CD again), Dragon Force (Sega Saturn), the Shining Force series, Final Fantasy games on the NES/SNES. Those are the types of RPG's I really enjoyed. I also really, really liked Titan Quest, but that's more hack & slash.

Games that I thought were ok, NWN1 & 2 (never finished 2 though), Two Worlds, Morrowind and Oblivion, Diablo 2 (single player).

I don't know if this will help give anyone a clue as to what to recommend. I'm sitting in front of my PC with the urge to do some questing, but I don't have any decent RPG's to play. I was going to start NWN2 up again, but I can't find my disc. Can anyone give me a decent recomendation on an RPG that you enjoyed?

One more thing, no MMORPG's please. With a wife and 18 month old it's hard to play online for as long as I'd like.

The newer the game with the more eye candy the better, but I don't mind playing an old game either if it's good.

Thanks!

I'd definitely get the Witcher if you want a new game.

As for older games, if you haven't played it, you absolutely need to get Planescape: Torment.

Some people have a tough time dealing with the very dated graphics of PS:T, so just be warned.

I am close to starting on The Witcher myself, but by all accounts it is quite wonderful.

We liked a lot of the same games I also had a lot of the sega systems for some reason, also you said dragon quest for saturn but I bet you meant dragon force!! Anyway I bought the witcher, it is pretty good not great though that is for sure. I just picked up suikoden 3 and Final Fantasy 10 for ps2 which both scored mid 9's in reviews. You arent going to find a lot of good RPG content on PC's...maybe baldurs gate 2 I loved that one I must say.

The Witcher is good ... but they have an "expanded version" coming ... you might want to wait a bit.

If you liked NWN2, then MotB the expansion is supposed to be a lot better and more polished ... i have 11 games waiting to play ... and it is in the middle of my list
[i just got Titan Quest also ... of course, there is also the expansion ... Immortal Throne ... both are ahead of MotB on my to be played list]

i thin k the next RPG i will play is Jade Empire .. it is supposed to be like KotOR and i am looking forward to it
[if you have not played KotOR, it is NOT to be missed; also VtMB - is the 'Deus Ex' of Vampire RPGs]

i thought 2 Worlds was "fair" ... try Gothic3, much better - it is patched and runs ok an a decent rig

If you liked Oblivion, DO play Shivering Isles .. it is s LOT better!

Oblivion was ok, but I cannot stand the level up system in it or Morrowind. I may try it again with some mods to make it more standard rpg-like. There's just so little incentive to level up or get special items since the enemies/monsters level up with you... it kind of ruins it for me.

Doh! Yea, Dragon Force. When I think of that game, I can still hear the troops yelling at the start of battle...

Fallout 1 and 2
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
It's sort of hack and slash, but Icewind Dale has its moments

Enemies dont level up with you in Morrowind, but I understand your point.

The only way I figured out to avoid the troubles in Oblivion is pick the skills you want to use a lot and make them secondary. Only primary skill increases will cause you to level.
Its possible to make a fighter with excellent combat skills that beats the game easily at level 1.

I dont have much to recommend to the OP, he likes Final Fantasy and related games more than real RPG's.
I suspect Knights of the Old Republic will be his best choice. Excellent hybrid between console and PC role-playing.

Did you do the 2 Fallouts and all the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale games? Those have stood the test of time, even though they're not current they're classics.

just don't sleep
-you can still increase your skills ... you just stay level 1 and the enemies never progress to match you ... it is a Awesome level 1 btw

i went thru SI on Level 2 because i was sick of Oblivion after 1250 hours ... it is like playing thru in 'easy' ... without touching the slider

On the OTHER hand, i got my Hero to Level 92 in [vanilla] Oblivion [without cheating or using the console] and I *guarantee* that there is no Enemy NPC that levels beyond 60 or so ... so you DO become "god" in your land .. you just can't 'bathe' in Lava without constantly healing.

I just started that and dear lord there's so much dialogue. I've gotten more xp from talking so far than killing. Good thing the story is awesome.

I forgot to mention I just about finished M&M6... that was a pretty good game! I wasted lots of hours with that one. I was thinking about checking out 7,8, and 9. It seems like 6 was the peak according to online reviews then they kind of went downhill more and more each release after 6. I also played till I got all my characters to level 255 (I think it's 255) in MM2 Gates to Another World. Good old Sega Genesis RPG'ing.

shortylickens, what do you conside 'real' RPG's? Depending on what you consider 'real' I may have played them, I'll let you know how I liked/disliked them... maybe that'll give you a better idea of what games I enjoyed.

Also, I watched Morrowind finished in under 10 minutes on Youtube... the enemies may not level with you, but as you said you know what I mean.

sherwinz28, I tried Wizardy8 but couldn't get past the looooong battles. It just took so long for every battle that I stopped playing it. Seemed like a decent game otherwise.

I got a free copy of Dungeon Siege with my 2900Pro (way to stress that shiney new DX10 graphics card! ) I was going to check that out, I putzed around for a hour or two with it.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

You've never heard of Planescape Torment? Wow, that was about the best SP RPG ever made, without equal. Unfortunately, Black Isle only made 1 patch for the game. I have the unofficial fix pack that fixes a plethora of other bugs, but the website I had bookmarked for it appears to no longer exist. If you want the fix pack, let me know. Its only about 250KB in size.

Also, pick up The Witcher, probably one of the best RPGs to be released in the last several years, definitely worth picking up. There is the Enhanced edition coming in May, which should be even better, plenty of new content and bug fixes. If you buy the game now though, all the new content will be available for digital download.

For Hack n Slash I would choose Titan Quest + expansion. Really enjoyable.

No, today is the first I've heard of it... according to Wiki it came out in 1999, back around then I didn't play many PC games. I was 21 and had my first apartment, so I was busy discovering beer. Back in those days my friends and I played a lot of Golden Eye on the N64 and spent more time infront of a Dreamcast then I worked. But, I didn't have a PC then, so I missed some good PC games from that era I'm sure. I'll look for that one on Ebay, I like older games as well because I can play them on the wife's laptop (Radeon 9000 w/32MB) and they are cheap. Thanks for the suggestion on that one everyone.

A lot of the older games from the late 90s actually run better under Linux w/ Wine than they do under Vista 64 and other modern OSs. Might be worth a shot, if you have trouble running some of them. There's also DOSBox for the even older games, such as the first versions of Ultima.

I would say go ahead and get the witcher... as soon as I finish it (on the last chapter right now) I was planning on posting my feelings about the entire game... to be honest I am still completely torn on it... and I have probably only another 10 or so hours to put into it...
