Recommend FPS/action game

A friend of mine and I are looking for a new game to play online. I'm looking for some recommendations on FPS/action games for us to play. I'm thinking of either Unreal Tournament 2003, or Battlefield 1942. Any other good multiplayer games released recently worth taking a look at?

If you haven't played wolfenstein yet.. I would give that a try... I have been playing it constantly since it came out.. never got sick of it yet.. it's loads of fun. Unreal 2003 is pretty fun to play too

Natural Selection, the new half life mod, is an awesome game. the engine is old, but the innovation in this game is amazing.

DEFINTELY download the multiplayer (vs singleplayer) BF1942 demo b4 u buy it. (make sure to dl the patch too)

I did and it was a horrendous experience. Forget the hype and try it out first. If you are happy just playing one map, you and ur friend can skip buying and just play the free demo.

If you are looking for online multiplayer then definitely check out BF1942...

Otherwise Soldier of Fortune 2 is also good, with the random mission generator it has very good replayability...

How about Counterstrike for Half Life? That's one of the best and most played multiplayer fps games online.
It logs more hours per month than all other online games combined.

UT2003 is great fun! I originally was going to pass on it, but I picked it up for $29 shipped from Amazon a while back and play it almost every night.

CounterStrike is fun. I quit playing that last spring (after playing it ALOT!!).. It seems like CS brought out alot of rude punks and cheaters though. maybe they've patched alot of the cheating by now.. I havn't kept up with it.

If you're not looking for Multiplayer... I recommend Mafia.

Yes, they've patched out virtually all of the cheating. Not really patched, but between Half Life Guard and Valve Anti Cheat, there is no more of the cheat paranoia that was so pervasive 6 months or so ago.

Still get a lot of rude punks, but if you go to a server that is well administered, that problem gets resolved.

Servers that use admin_mod have the ability to use a word list which will filter out the profanity and abusive slang that is commonly used. It can be gotten around, but it does help.

As someone else mentioned, you should check out Soldier of Fortune 2. I never really got into CS, but most SoF2 players say its like CS circa 2002. Great fun...I started with the MP test in April and it sucked away about 4 months of my life when full retail came out. Lotsa weapons and maps, with the flexibility of choosing primary weapons, secondary weapons, pistols, equipment and different grenade types. Its more reality-based than UT2k3 and even RTCW, with the game physics resembling reality rather than pure fantasy. Much smoother engine than RTCW, and the character models and impact prediction are much more reliable than RTCW as well.

I guess I just kinda got burned out from it though after logging over 4k frags and placing first on Quakesh1t for the month of August

I'm tempted to fire it back up though with my ti4200 turbo and the second patch with the SIG assault rifle.....

AA is nice looking, but its a bit too realistic. Its just not as polished as it could be and there is NO gore whatsoever. If you are into fast-paced FPS that are somewhat realistic, I'd stay away from UT2k3. I found the demo to be a total snoozer with weapons that just spam damage all over. No finesse involved.

I heard that SOF2 was not that good for single player. is this true?
Is it worth it just for online play?
