Not looking for a gaming laptop but something pretty good that will last 4 years of college. Needs to be a PC. What specs do you recommend? What brands?

Whatever from a pawn shop. If it dies, throw it out and get another one. A 10 year old machine can handle college.

If it's for note taking, I'd recommend the Surface Pro 4. Otherwise a Dell XPS 13 or HP Spectre.
This or MAC book. Top student laptops since days. I know they are expensive but they are worth every penny because 100% of the time you are googling + word and maybe the odd power point. Trust me I know

Dell cheapo business-line laptop. My Vostro from 2011 I bought for grad school still works. Replaced the battery once, it doesn't get that much use. I did use it at work for a year because I needed two screens.

Whatever you get, throw a SSD in it and install Linux, it will make it like 10x faster. Laptop hard drives are always so slow, and if you want to buy one that comes with a SSD you pay an arm and a leg for that option. Cheaper to buy a SSD separately.

If you get a used one just make sure it's actually Sata, as a lot of them are IDE and I don't believe they make IDE SSDs.

Personally I always liked Dell for prebuilt machines/laptops.

I don't think this will be for note taking. What specs do you recommend?

Assuming it's not for a major that would require specialized or particular programs more demanding than a browser, word processor, etc: I'd say a 6th gen (Skylake) Core i5 (preferably an i7), 8GB RAM, an SSD (256GB or higher would be better, but 128GB would be fine depending on the other specs and price), and 1080p or higher resolution screen.

Screen size depends on whether you want an ultrabook (usually less than 14") or a slightly bigger (15"+). Laptops with screens above 15" are usually desktop replacement gaming or professional laptops nowadays; 17" laptops otherwise aren't as common as they used to be. Touchscreens are nice, but not really a necessity for Windows 10 on the desktop. I like convertible/hybrid laptops like the Surface Pro/Book and Lenovo Yoga lines because I find tablet mode to be useful, but it's purely a matter of personal preference.

Avoid hard drives or hybrid drives even if the capacity is enticing (often 500GB or 1TB). Hard drives make everything slower, and they wear down and slow down over time. Not a good option if it needs to be reliable and good for 4 years, and you can always use an external hard drive or cloud storage if extra capacity is needed.

I'd also make sure to read plenty of reviews to see if the models you are considering have any issues that wouldn't show up in specs. They can also give you an idea of features and specs that may not seem important, like webcam quality/placement, audio/speaker quality, display viewing angles, WiFi radio reliability and reception, etc, as well as evaluating battery life.

I'd also consider getting a "Signature Edition" laptop from the Microsoft site or store. They are versions of the regular laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc, but they ship without any of the bloat (junkware) that the manufacturers often install. Windows will run much better and safer clean of those apps.

We really need a price. A $300 laptop is not going to reliably get you through 4 years of daily use...and they specs are going to be too disappointing if it's your only computer.

You can't go wrong with any of the thinkpad X series, but you'll be spending around $1000.

I really don't recommend a tablet based computer for note taking. They're simply not good enough for writing at normal speeds and angles, and all the psychology research points to needing to write stuff, not type, to remember things.

Crono's post covers the specs well. Although I would really push you toward something with a 14" screen if you're going to carry it around a lot.

I wouldn't subject anyone that will be doing a lot of typing to the horror that is the MacBook keyboard.

I'm kind of pissed how much SSDs have dropped in price since I got mine in 2013. For what I paid for my 120 GB, I can buy at least 240 GB now. Think a good 480 GB is under $200 now.

Aww, poor baby. My 60GB SSD cost more than both my 75GB Raptors I was replacing it with combined.

Yeah that's why I tend to not be an early adopter. Though I did make the mistake of buying an OCZ as my first drive.... so far so good though. I have an OCZ in my windows machine and a Crucial in my main one. Oddly enough I also have a spare, I don't even remember where it came from. I should look at putting it to use.

Actually it's crazy to think how much I paid for some of the hard drives drives in my file server, have a bunch of 1TB WD Blacks in one of my arrays and they were probably like $200 a pop back when I bought them. I would buy a few at a time and grow the array as it was too much to buy all at once. Now I can buy 3TB drives for close to the same price and justify raid 10.

That's another thing, the keyboard is probably almost just as, if more important than the specs. Some keyboards just feel wrong and are not pleasant to use while others are better.

We got new computers at work and new keyboards, but we all ended up going back to our old keyboards since the new ones sucked, they were kinda like laptop keyboards with super low profile keys, but even worse than a lot of laptops I've used. It felt like typing on a microwave more than a computer.

I've been thinking about taking one of my model Ms to work, but I don't get a lot of keyboard time, so it isn't a priority.

I cry myself to sleep every night thinking about it...

I went through a refresh at my old job and they replaced the tower, keyboard, and mouse. Why? They were the basic, probably combo $15 model. Hundreds of computers, not to mention the trash generated. Cheaper to replace them as they go -- I've never had either fail on me.
