Recommend IM program for Vista

I know many of you like to use certain IM programs like Miranda, Trillian, etc. I used to use Trillian but was dissatisified with its incompatibilities with AIM file transfers and direct connects. Eventually I switched over to AIM 5.9, which really isn't that bad. Memory usage is pretty good and it's very usable and has all the features I need.

Well now I see that AIM 5.9 is not compatible with Vista. Do you think I could make it work in Vista using compatibility work-arounds? If not, I really don't want to use AIM 6. It seems way more bloated than previous versions. Maybe I should give Trillian a try again? I'm hoping 5.9 will just work in XP compatible mode.

Update: It appears AOL just claims 5.9 is not supported in Vista, but it should actually work no problem.

I'm actually enjoying AIM 6. Might as well give it a spin, you can always uninstall it later.

Windows Live Messenger is what I use. I'm one that doesn't like to have 20 apps on my systems by 20 different companies.

Well I need to stick with AOL, everyone I know uses it.

Perhaps 5.9 will work just fine in Vista anyway though. They just say it's not "supported."

I did give it a spin, I felt it was too bloated. It uses more memory than 5.9 and runs two processes all the time, aim.exe and aolsoftware.exe.

I'm a Trillian user myself, but I think its likely that most IM apps will run under Vista without problems. They will just say its unsupported to get you to upgrade to the most bloated version and save them some time on tech support.

Don't have Vista installed yet.

Live Messenger allows AOL, MSN, Yahoo! contacts. You'll be restricted to "traditional" IM functionality though. No Video calls.

Live Messenger FTW!

Well I installed it, right off the bat memory usage is almost 50 MB. AIM 5.9 is only like 15. And it doesn't seem possible to add AOL contacts.

I've been using TrillianPro 3.1 build 121 on Vista Buisiness, no compatibility mode just a regular install. Uses 6.8mb of RAM, works same as it did on XP Pro for me. I like that I can use the Xfire plugin for Trillian and truly have only one messenger as I have contacts on all three major networks and another 200 or so on Xfire

For you, that is a very good reason to be using Trillian. For me, however, everyone I know uses AOL, not a single contact on MSN, Yahoo, or Xfire, and I got tired of Trillian's quirks, so I'm pretty happy with AIM 5.9. Glad to hear Trillian works fine for you under Vista, though.

aim 5.5.3599 works fine under vista...and so does miniAIM.
Thanks, I'm sure 5.9 is fine then, too.

How do you set it up to view your aim contacts? Can you import an aol contact list or something? I just downloaded it and didnt have much time to fiddle with it.
