Actually those are better for gaming than any of those PVA/MVA input-lagged frustration panels.

Sure, S-IPS and its newer iterations that provide the better color saturation and angles of -VA with the speed and latency of a TN panel are ideal, but very few manufacturers are making displays with those panels anymore and they tend to be expensive, so unless you can wait for the upcoming revision of TN panels that purport to offer such benefits themselves, you're at the mercy of PVA/MVA input lag or TN's downsides.

the HP LP2475W sounds uber nice, but the price is just too outrageous for me to even consider buying. the benq2400w sounds like it should be more affordable, but I didn't find it at newegg, tigerdirect or amazon. And are there any other 24" lcds that won't cost a fortune?

If you can handle the size and bulk then a used Sony GDM-FW900 is the way to go. Con is Geometry. Pluses include that you can scale resolution without quality loss. Something LCDs struggle with.

Also, very good viewing angles. And killer black levels/color reproduction. I currently have Dell 2208wp and HPA7217A (Rebadged GDM-FW900). And did I mention incredible monitor to game on? Lag/Ghosting? Not on this puppy.
