I'm moving to CA this summer and may need to buy a car, so I need some advice. My priorities are as follows:

1. Reliable: I want this car to cost me as little as possible in terms of repair & maintenance over the long term (I plan on keeping it 5+ years).
2. Fuel efficient: 35+ mpg highway.
3. Compact: I find small cars easier to drive and park.
4. Cheap: under $8,000.
5. Used: given my price range, this is pretty much a requirement. Preferably less than 10 years old and with less than ~90,000 miles.

In other words, I don't give a crap about any luxury features, how fast the car is, how cool it looks, or anything of that sort. I just want a simple commuter car that reliably and efficiently gets me from point A to point B. So far, the two obvious choices are the Toyota Corolla and the Honda Civic. What other cars should I be considering?

People will say Toyota or Honda but they're so overpriced used, I wouldn't recommend them. Maybe a Focus.

A couple come to mind, but you'd have to get them used to get them at the price you're looking for.

Toyota Corolla
Honda Civic
Toyota Yaris Sedan or Hatchback (3 door or 5 door)
Honda Fit
Hyundai Accent Sedan or Hatchback
Nissan Versa Sedan or Hatchback
Chevy Aveo
Ford Focus

I think most of these should be able to get 35+ highway mpg as long as you're not lead-footed.

Not many cars for 8k for that mpg. Focus is probably the best bet unless you want a old and shitty civic/corolla.

sentra???

You could find an older civic or corolla, but finding that may be a little harder, but it is possible.

Miata would do....maybe a protege.

An Elantra could probably be had for that price.

I was going to say Focus but your stellar argument swayed me.

For the money you'll get a newer, nicer, lower mileage domestic than a Toyota or Honda.

an early 200x civic, corolla, sentra, mazda 3, celica (sporty), accord (small to me), matrix (hatchback)

all are EXCELLENT in reliability and can be found easily for $8k or less.

remember: you ALWAYS get what you pay for... so keep that in mind when buying a car
