Here is my current setup:

* Cooler Master Elite 330
* Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H 780G motherboard
* AMD X2 AM2 5600+
* 4GB Kingston ValueRam (4x1gb)
* EVGA 8600GTS 512MB video card
* 2X Dell E207WFP 20" WS LCD

My CPU fan is extremely loud when the motherboard "smart cpu fan" kicks in and the fan is maxing out at 4500rpm. It is the original stock HSF with Artic Silver thermal grease. If I turn the smart control off...the fan constantly stays at 4500rpm. Can anyone recommend me a good and quiet HSF for the cpu?

I also have two 120mm fans in the front and rear....they are the CoolerMaster brand I believe and probably contribute to a lot of the noise too. All in all I want to quiet this puppy down. When I am editing my HD video....the thing sounds like it wants to take off! Any recommendations on 120mm quiet fans?

Also, do the Quad-Core chips run cooler than the chip I have now?

Well....apparently my biggest problem here is my dang PSU fan. As the cpu heats up...the cpu fan gets up there.....and then the PSU fan goes crazy. This here in lies my problem. The 120mm fans are quiet as can be.....this is mainly my PSU that is going nuts. Can I fix this? It is the CoolerMaster RP-550-PCAR 550wt PSU - http://www1.coolermaster.com/i...eXtreme%20Power%20550W.

There's a section for low noise heatsink. Hope it helps!

I'm not sure what you consider loud but I find 120mm fans the best compromise between cfm airflow and noise level versus the more traditional 80mm fans. I currently use 4x Cooler Master R4-S2S-124K-GP 120mm fans. They have good airflow (44cfm) and low noise (19 dBa). You can try these too if you really want to keep noise level to a minimum. 120mm. 720rpm. 11.27cfm. 13dBa.

RE: Quad-core chips running cooler? I can't say for sure but my Phenom II 720x3 ran much cooler than my AM2 6000+. In general, newer and smaller designed (45nm vs 65/90nm) CPUs are usually better both in terms of efficiency and heat output.

Retail aftermarket PSU > generic brand PSU. Once you seen the light, there's no going back.

These are the two PS that I'm currently using. They're both quiet, have decent power output and very efficient. Corsair 450 and BFG 550. I would recommend the latter for future headroom but overall, I'm very impressed with both of them. The Corsair 550 isn't too bad for just $10 more.

i had a Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 and found it very quiet and did a good job cooling my 7750BE. Also the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 is very quiet but is also massive in size so make sure it will fit in your case before ordering.

Well.... I'm running close to you... Here's my specs and what I use to cool that CPU down with..

Gigabyte GA-MA69VS-S2 MoBo
AMD 6000+ x2 running @ 3.2ghz (OC'd)
2x1gb Corsair DDR2 800 running at 667 (slower speed increased stability)
BFGtech 8800GTS 640mb running stock
750W Thermaltake PSU
150GB raptor HD (10,000 RPM... it screams)
500GB WD caviar HD (7,800RPM)

Here's what I use to keep that CPU under 40C under load.
