Recommend me a digital camera

I'm thinking about buying a semi-cheap digicam to take on a backpacking trip at the end of july. I don't need anything special, but it needs to be light and relatively durable. I don't want to spend more than 150 dollars, less if possible. I don't really know anything about digital cameras, so any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

What you might get for $150 may not be worth packing on such a trip. Get a good camera, like a Canon A70- but used. Try E-Bay for that.

Most here would recommend a low end Canon A series, e.g. A40, A60, or A70.

Office Depot this week has the A60 for $149 before a $50 rebate.

Amazon, I believe, has the A70 for $199.

THese are compact cameras and easy to use. When camera is shut off, the lens are automatically protected with a cover. The cameras utilize compactflash memory, which is cheap, and AA size batteries. You should buy a few sets of rechargeable NiMH batteries. If you're going camping, charge all the batteries before you leave

I personally have the A70 and am very pleased with it. THe battery life is amazing and the pic. quality is good enough. Search this site for reviews: http://www.steves-digicams.com/

I am not too sure about the 150 price, but for about 250 you can get a very good digital camera. The Nikon Coolpix 3200 is a awesome camera, light and takes very good pictures. It has 15 scene modes (not sure what it means but its more than what other camera's have).

This is a great camera for anyone really.

I've got a Kodak DC3400, which I rather like. It's got 2x optical zoom, and 3x digital zoom that's really not all that bad. Heck, I might as well do a little review here - I always wind up doing that anyway.
One thing to bear in mind is the memory cards that cameras use - they don't always come with one. Someone in the FS/T forum is usually selling one; just make sure to get the right kind - CompactFlash or Secure Digital - that will fit the camera you're going to buy.

It uses a USB hookup to the PC, but I think it only runs at USB 1.1 speeds; probably limited by the CompactFlash memory cards that it uses (no internal memory on the camera either).
I would not call it light - it uses 4 AA batteries, which by themselves can weigh nearly as much as some other cameras. But it probably needs that for the optical zoom lens, so I'd assume.
Either way, I use a 32MB flash card in the camera, and with the flash and LCD enabled, I can't even fill it before the 1800mAh NiMH batteries run out of power. So bring extra batteries and/or a charger along. If you haven't started using rechargables in many small devices, now's a good time to start. There are sometimes good deals on NiMH batteries posted in the Hot Deals forum.
I like the image quality of the pics; I used the DC3400 to take all the PC pictures on my website. Bear in mind though, those pictures have been resized and re-compressed when I edited them. (The Tesla Coil section was done using a pitiful little webcam many years ago.)
There's not much image degredation from the JPEG compression; I personally would have liked to see a super-high quality setting, but the current level is still very good, and most people wouldn't be able to notice the slight artifacting.
One other thing, don't know how important it is, is the speed at which images can be taken in succession. With the LCD off (and therefore the instant preview disabled), you can take 4 pictures in fairly rapid succession, like maybe every 2-3 seconds. After the 4th, it needs maybe 10 seconds (a review site might have exact numbers) to finish writing the last image(s) to the flash card. Then you can take another one or two quick shots. But the pictures are about 500KB each (varies according to the picture), so it can take a little bit to write them to the relatively slow flash card, which is just the way most flash technology is.
It does have a Macro Mode too, for shots as close as about 10 inches; there's also an infinite-focus setting.
And finally, there is a tripod mount on the bottom of the camera.

The other one I can think to recommend is Kodak's Easyshare CX6200. It lacks optical zoom, but it does have an adequate digital zoom function. It also lacks Macro mode.
One thing about this camera that you may notice right out of the box - it is light. Even with the 2 AA's it takes. Very compact, and light.
It's also USB, but it uses a Secure Digital card instead of comactflash. SD cards, if you've not seen them before, are tiny. On the subject of memory, this camera does have internal memory, but only enough for about 8 pictures. Pop a 128MB SD card in there, and you'll get more like 180.
I can't say much on battery life, as I don't own this camera - I only used it briefly, to show my sister how to use it. It was a Christmas present for her, so I didn't get to put it through a lot of use. All I know is, filling up 128MB with pictures, before or after you get done deleting the ones you don't want using the camera's menus, can take a long time.
Oh, this one does have a movie mode - it takes small, grainy, slient videos, and compresses them into Quicktime format.

Ok, that's all. I guess you can tell, I like Kodak cameras. My first real digital camera (not a cheap little webcam-type thing) was a DC3200 - a 1MP thing with no zoom functions, no macro mode, no extra anything. The next step up from that was the DC3400 I have now.

Thanks a lot for all the help. I think I will try to get a Canon A60. My dad has a 256MB CF card that I may try to borrow.

Now, any recommendations for a case? Again, it needs to be small and light, and because I'm going to be doing about 7 miles a day over rough terrain I need something that can withstand some jostling. So, how fragile are cameras, and would one of those 10-15 dollar cases at newegg be fine, or do I need something more sturdy?

Welp, if you want simple, Kodak would have to be the way to go. And they're good too, so can't go too wrong unless you're an enthusiaste. If I remember correctly, they come with the works too (battery, etc...)

The Canon A70 from all I've read is an amazing camera. I still wish I bought it, but the price wasn't right at the time.

I just bought mine in January, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P72 3MP. It was a purchase on the fly really, my family was sick of me talking and researching about Digital Cameras so my mother gave me $100 and said "Buy, buy buy." X-Mas gift really. Was looking at a Samsung (similar to this Sony) online but it was OOS at the time. I wanted a camera with Sound & good video, so I'm sure we're looking in different genres.

My experience: Sony is ok. Nothing spectacular, and the memory stick is proprietary (normally don't support it that, but o'whale). The sound is amazing! Doesn't offer a feature to go back and record sound to a pic, that's a lil disappointing, but you can record sound right after you take the pic. This things mic is amazing though. MPEG is good. Memory stick is a bit expensive. Comes w/ recharger & 2 NiMH, which is awesome... $10-15 more you can pickup 2-4 more NiMH Energizer 2100 mA batteries (a must).

Fuji Cameras have a beautiful sharpness... they just seem more vibrant. I really enjoy the pix of my Bro-In-Law's Fuji 2 MP. You can get Fuji cheap also, in January they had few options for sound/video, so they may still be cheap. But most use XD Cards, the kewlest but most expensive memory card.

May want to consider optical zoom... kinda wish I had a 10X like are out there now, but 3x is good for my normal pix. But when you're at a sporting event, you really would like to see the cars/player on the field... or the hot chics on the other end of the stands.

Check Comp USA, Office Max, Best Buy. They will normally throw in a few memory card (specifically Office Max). That will cut your price down. The Sony comes w/ it's own charger/batteries, but I can't vouch for any others at this time. For $150 you'll be cutting it close. I'd highly suggest a 256 MB memory card, but if expenses don't allow, 64 would normally be sufficient... however on a camping trip? Good luck. If you have a laptop you can power up and d/l pics too, then shoot. You need 256 though.

Hope my rambling helped... enjoy the camping trip.

Yeah, go with Kodak. I use my mom's Kodak EasyShare DX4900, a 4 megapixel camera with 2x optical zoom. Only real downside - I think all Kodaks, including mine, suffer from chromatic aberrations (purple streaks along very high contrast objects like lights and stuff). It's a good camera tho, I really like it.

Forgot about my Kodak DC3400--I also recommend Kodak. They give nice colors and are simple to use. My DC3400 feels like a tank--very sturdy.

As for the case, since the camera you're thinking off is small, just go to Target or similar and pick up a case there.

I have a Kodak. A 4MP DX4900. My other camera - a 1MP Canon A10 takes better pictures. MUCH better pictures. In fact I would stay as far away as possible from Kodak entry level cameras. I'm amazed there are so many votes here for Kodak. Coupling a 4MP sensor with a lens half the size of good 1MP cameras.. I don't get it how they actually decided to produce that design.

For your price range the best perhaps would be Canon A60.

The Canon A60 is actually very nice - most can't tell a lot of diff from the A70. Since you can get it for $100. AR by one of the offers listed above, don't hesitate

Jeff, maybe because you're writing as if half of the forum viewers are potatoes. Of course it's USB. Of course he should use rechargeables. Of course to most of the things you wrote. One valuable bit of information you gave is about the battery life. I would consider a camera which can't fill up a 32MB flash card with 4 1800MAH pure crap. I wouldn't recommend it. On the contrary I would recommend staying away from it.

No, it's in his sig link. Anyone capable of logical analysis (which, unfortunately, are far too few these days) can blow most of his statements apart...

Canon A series is excellent get the one you can afford A60 or A70. The battery life on a trip is crucial and they give the best in terms of long life evergy supply. Stay away from xxx digital zooms they are gimmicks and not really to be considered. Its optical zoom which matters most

Take a look at this thread and you will understand what I mean.

Digital Vs Optical Zoom

One thing to keep in mind - if you go the A70 route - get the A75 instead. The price is almost the same and you get a couple of updated features - the larger LCD and more AiAF points. Most important of all - you avoid the ugly looking shiny metal frame around the LCD on the A70.

Zepper - about Jeff's sig - actually most of these statements have some credibility. Not sure about the ones concerning internal US affairs, but the international points are more or less acurate.

for $200 I just bought a Fuji A330 3.2MP w/ 3X optical zoom from CompUSA. It was last weeks special that included a free 64MB xD card in adition to the standard 16MB card that comes with the camera. I have been using this camera all week on my trip to palm beach (where I still am) and have taken upwards of 200 photos with it all with no trouble and excellent quality. It can be set to 1MP, 2MP, 3MPN and 3MP somthin else, which I expect is less compression as it can hold less photos. On the higher compressed 3MP setting I get 85 images per 64MB card, upwards of 100 on the 2MP setting. I have also used the Snapfish online service to order prints from these digital photos, but as they are being shipped to my home address I won't see them until tommorrow when I get back from florida.

The Fuji A210 (3.2MP) and A205 (2MP) are also great deals. I actually bought the A210, and then returned it because I needed the money, only to buy the A330 3 weeks later when I had more dough. The A210 costs about $140, worked great for the week I used it off and on, and took almost as nice of pics as the A330. The A205, only having a 2MP lens, is a nice alternitive for your situation, costing only $99 at most stores, so you could easily buy another card to go with the included 16MB one.

I hope I have been of help, and if you would like I can post some photos I have taken with my A330 Fuji, but probably not until tommorrow when I get home to my cable connection, as I am on 56k right now.

I see; I write it that way....well, simply because there are some here who may be new to digital cameras. And rechargable batteries.
I've used a camera already that had a serial interface. When I got a USB camera, I loved the speed, so for me it was a big deal.

No, it's in his sig link

Oh, I see now. Didn't even consider that link there; it's always there, so I just tend to look past it.
