I'm not usually into gaming and am unaware of any new games, but have some free time and would like to get back into it. Can you recommend me some games, which I believe are called first person shooting games. Prior games I liked were:

Castle Wolfenstein (The old version)
Doom
Duke Nukem

A game with a very small learning curve. Something I can just install and start shooting things up. Should have the availablilty to use cheat codes.

I have a fast computer with a high end graphics card.

Get wolfenstein (the newest one). It's dirt cheap and simple. When you get up to speed on controls and want something more sophisticated, you might look into online teamplay games like BF3 and Planetside 2.

Borderlands wasn't bad... Wasn't what I'd call really good, but it wasn't bad. Not much of a learning curve, and it had some of the same crude humor of Duke Nukem.

What ever game you get, I'd get Steam and buy from there. Game packs there are pretty good, in fact steam is so good it got me out of pirating.

Borderlands is shooty fun. It was the first FPS I'd played in a long time and I had a lot of fun with it.

Saints' Row The Third is also fun, though much shorter.

Get them on Steam, and preferably when the collection version with DLC is on sale.

Everybody knows it but I'll say it again: Quake, Quake II, Quake 3:Arena, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, RTCW, and any Serious Sam game.

While I'm not exactly against Steam, it is important to note that buried in the user agreement is a clause which basically says Valve can nuke your account at any time for any reason, and you lose access to any games you bought if that happens. Odds are they aren't going to just randomly nuke people's accounts because they want you to spend money, but they could.

So, I personally only buy games on the cheap. That way, as long as I get at least one playthrough out of them, I figure I got my money's worth. Games that you can activate on Steam are a whole other story, since as long as they aren't Steamworks games, you can theoretically still use even if your Steam account goes away.

This concludes the boring non-gaming reality intrusion on the thread.

I can also second Borderlands. Actually started again in prep for B2.
As far as a little Strat on the side FTL is also a immensely fun game. Been part of the Beta and have over 130 hours in it.

Given that you are basically a time traveler of first person shooters from the 90's, when I started too (with Wolf3D, Doom etc just like you)

I would suggest Duke Nukem Forever, it has a lot wrong with it but I bet you'd enjoy it. Serious Sam BFE, and Doom 3 BFG Edition when that releases soon.

I'd also recommend, maybe above all of those even... the first Painkiller game.

Almost all games have to be "Activated" by the parent company, and if they don't like your serial number...

Wait, no one has suggested Half-Life and Half-Life 2 yet?

Given the games listed in the OP, these are obvious (though old) choices. Arguably the the two best FPS games ever.

yep, its not just steam.. but it does bring up a HUGE point he is trying to get across. Its not really a STEAM deal,.. just a "all eggs in one basket" deal. If for any reason STEAM gets screwed up (think of all the things, hacker, miscomunications, etc) you are out plain and simple. YOU AGREED to a ULA that says if STEAM (Valve) says you suck and are done, you are.. they dont even have to give you a good reason.. not right, but standard Software agreement.

I dont worry to much about it and have over 900 games on steam but it something to consider.

as for FPS.. I would have to say borderlands (for this person) many really good FPS but most are a bit more complex and have more widespread goals and ideas on how to play.. borderlands.. shoot and quest. maybe the PAINKILLER games.. they are even more old school.. shoot, shoot, shoot.. shoot till everybody is dead to open door.. shoot.. shoot.. S Sam is that way too..

Painkiller
Serious Sam 1 and 2 3 is even good but slighlyt more complex.
BorderLands.

Thank you, and yes, that was apparently something of a deficiency in my earlier comment.

If your Steam account is nuked for whatever reason, ALL Steam games go with it. Now if say the copy of Dawn of War 2 I got off Amazon's digital download service ends up getting nuked, that's only a max of 3 games. The copy of Metro 2033 I got at the same time should be unaffected.

Not an argument against Steam, and I'm sure the same applies to Origin and any other competing service, just something people should be aware of since it's important, and the majority of us don't sit and read 10 pages of fine print legalese every time we want to install some new bit of software. I will only buy Steam games when they're dirt cheap and I figure that the price is roughly equal to (or less than) the value of a single play through of the game to me. If others are more trusting, then I sincerely hope everything works out for them.

If you haven't played Halflife 1+2 and the Episode 1,2 for HL2 I would highly recommend that. While you're at it make sure you play Portal too if you haven't.

Portal (and P2)! I can get behind that. It is different than the FPS games you mentioned but it is a great game. There is a story, some humor, and little time pressure so you are not rushed. Controls are simple. PORTAL is my first choice for you.

Personally not a big fan of the HL series but everyone else on the planet loves HL so that might be worth checking out. Dog is pretty cool...

I really liked FarCry but the controls are more complicated, there are extra lean left and lean right buttons as well as extra buttons for night vision, binoculars, etc. FC is pretty hard to get the hang of. Maybe check it out once your skilz are back.

FarCry2 is also awesome IMO but there is a learning curve for sure. The vehicles are all fun to drive, cept the one time they make you drive the big truck. There are also annoyances like you have malaria, and older weapons jam up. This adds a whole level of unpredictability that can be a challenge to deal with. It is frustrating at first but eventually you get a good cache of new weapons that are reliable. Once you get the lay of the land it is fun to use different tactics. You can be all stealthy and complete some missions without firing a shot or you can go in guns a blazing. Good fun!

Crysis is cool but there is a whole new set of controls to use because of the fancy suit you wear. It gets a little far out by the end...

BIOSHOCK! Bioshock is the best but the controls are complicated because you have to deal with both conventional weapons and "plasmids". There is a key you can hit to freeze gameplay that lets you pick your weapon so that helps a lot. Zap em to stun em then shoot em! Fantastic story and good humor in Bioshock. Highly recommend if you can handle all the controls.

I'm not having any fun with Metro 2033 at all. It is more like work than fun so far.

Painkiller is just non-stop crap coming at you. Don't care for that one personally...

Max Payne?

The first is an absolute classic and MP3 is just a great game. Some say a little repetitive but as you want FPS fun then you could go for that although it's third person, still well worth playing. A humourous character with a good storyline and gorgeous graphics.

Max Payne is in Third Person Perspective. The OP wants games that are First Person Shooters.
