The criteria is that it just has to have good gameplay and it shouldn't be a first-person shooter because I find them really boring.

I have ALREADY played:
* Wow / Everquest / Vanguard / EVE / most other MMOs
* Fallout 3 (a previous ATOT recommendation)

What's next?

Knight's of the Old Republic (KOTOR). I've never played it, but I hear it recommended quite often. What is it about FPS games that you find boring? Maybe you haven't tried the right ones. There are some excellent story-based FPS's out there, where it's not all about shooting as many bullets into as many enemies in the shortest time possible.

Another vote for KOTOR!

I just finished dead space. Extremely difficult and great atmosphere but wound up being repetitive. Still, very well executed game. The PC version runs very well. If you like Event Horizon, you will like this game

Neverwinter Nights 1 player made mods Hex Coda01, DreamCatcher series and most importantly the Tales of Arterra series. Do not bother with the original game or expansion packs, except possible the first chapter of SoU and the last two chapters of HotU.

Baldurs gate series, with the mods listed here.

Planescape: Torment (chief rival of BG2 for the best RPG ever made)

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (you can play it in first person or third person mode), grab the latest community patch as it is a broken, buggy mess.

KotOR

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (makes you mad because it is such a good game, yet no sequel)

Not in that order

mass effect if you want a modern cinematic rpg. you've explored mmo's and an fps rpg, maybe try a different type if that's your bag.

otherwise, any other criteria? you looking for action, adventure, strategy, or what?

I'll have to second mass effect.

If you don't mind playing some older games I would play planescape torment with widescreen mod + interface mod(so text and buttons aren't so small when playing at high resolution.) The game was originally design for like 600x480 I think. Currently playing it at 1280x1024 with these mods.

It takes a while to get set up though. You have to do a manual full install to be able to install the mods. (google 'planescape torment full install')

There are 2 different versions of the game. A 2 disc with bad animations and a 4 disc. I'd get the 4 disc. But you also have to install the 1.1 patch after... So in this order:

install torment
do manual full install
install 1.1 patch
install unoficial patch
install widescreen mod
install interface mod

Trust me, it's worth it.

Mass Effect for an action RPG (3rd person).

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for platforming (best if you have a controller)

Trine for side scrolling platforming.

I am currently waiting for october to roll around so I can pick up NBA 2K10 for the PC.

But for now, DiRT is one killer rally racing game. You can find it at all EB/GS stores for only $10.

Speaking of Trine, the game was great until the last level. This jumping, shooting, with a time limit is not a forte on the PC. I can NOT finish this game because the last level is just too hard. Did you finish this game with a PC?

I played it with a mouse and keyboard and it was fine.

For a good RTS, try out Company of Heroes.

That's a list I like. Also consider the Total War series or Galactic Civilizations 2 if you like strategy games.

There is a game made by now defunct Muckyfoot productions called Startopia. Talk about something simple that will hook you for a few hours. Its your duty to keep your alien workers happy by making sure you have enough bathrooms and recreation so on and so on. You can even landscape. Its worth checking out and you can get it cheap. The game title again is Startopia.

You've convinced me. Is it possible to play it in windowed mode?

I recommend "the witcher"

I didn't play KOTOR nor vampire because the graphics look way too outdated.

I bought this on Steam and was very disappointed. It's not even a little bit funny and I finished it in two sessions. Not recommended.
