No e-books/e-readers.

I need something that will fit in the rack near my toilet.

I had Sport Compact Car and Car & Driver back a decade ago.
Forums quickly replaced it... so did edmunds.

However, I like to read magazines time to time. Car and Driver has changed, SCC closed down.

What should I get? I live in America, but drive Japanese. My cars modified (see sig), but I like to read up on new cars.

So far ones that stick out to me are Road and Track and CAR.

Suggestions fellow gear heads?

I read Motor Trend...think I picked it up for $2.99/yr a while ago.

I've been pretty satisfied with Autoweek. At least there's real motorsport coverage in it. Reviews are tad thin though.

I usually enjoy the tuner mags. (Import tuner, European Car..etc.)
I always wanted a sub to the Official Top Gear magazine, but last I checked it was more than $120...

My favorite is actually Roundel. More articles and technical stuff, less crap. Yes, it is a BMW car club magazine...but that does not mean they go easy on BMW. They are constantly harping BMW on quality issues (like the N54 and runflats), and it is not uncommon for them to have a showdown between a BMW and some other car...and the other car win (Just recently the Infiniti M56 beat the new 550i). I do read Car & Driver as I've had a subscription to that forever...but I feel like it has lost its touch over time. Automobile is OK from time to time. I feel the same about Motortrend that I feel about Car & Driver.

Cheaper to go to Barnes & Noble and buy a copy every month.

But my wife did get it for me a couple years back. Was definitely nice to come home and see it waiting.

I didn't realize they had it. I might go by one today and see if I can grab a copy.

I definitely agree. Road & Track is easily my favorite magazine. Hell, R&T would be worth subscribing to for Peter Egan's column alone, but combine that with Dennis Simanaitis' tech articles and you've got an incredible resource for car buffs.

Motor trend and r&t are on my short list. I would love to have top gear but too pricey.

Now I'm tryin to find them cheaper than the little insert cards in the mags

I recently got a subscription to a bunch of auto mags because they were so cheap. I still don't like Automobile. Articles aren't as well written as C&D and the writers are rather juvenile (lots of sexual innuendos).

Road & Track & Auto Week

Auto Week comes every two weeks - quite like the classifieds listings

Another one for road and track, the only magazine I feel is worth buying. In addition to the tech articles mentioned, they also have a long term test fleet, so you can get an idea of what living everyday with some cars entails. My car is still in the fleet

Edit: They are also the only ones that cover racing decently, and even better, not only nascar, they do a good job on Formula 1!

Road & Track is definitely the best domestic one, but several British magazines are much better (and more costly), including CAR, EVO, and Top Gear. Still, when a subscription to R&T is something like $10, and the Brits are charging more than ten times that, the choice to just get R&T is pretty easy. Car & Driver is probably second-best as a general-interest magazine, and there are some decent genre-specific magazines like European Car. Agree with another poster that Roundel is quite good, but unless you're a BMW owner or contemplating buying one (you can get a $500-1,000 rebate on a new or CPO BMW as a club member), it's probably not worth the cost of joining BMWCCA to get it.
