I quit having liquor with any kind of soda a couple years ago. Now I mostly just stick to Tanqueray 10 and tonic or Ketel One and tonic. Every once in awhile I'll have a Ketel Redbull if I'm out at a bar and am feeling tired.

Gin and Tonic
Gin and Club Soda
Gin and Gingerale
Crown and Gingerale

That's usually what I go with for such an order.

G&T is good, but I never drink them because they give the world's worst hangovers. I basically just stick to diet drinks as my mixers now.

As for the gin, I'm not big into it, but I know people who are and they seem to like Beefeater and Bombay.

I hate when they put cherry or cherry juice in an old fashioned. I gotten so many bad ones I've stopped ordering them.

It's funny that everybody is talking "Old Fashioneds" because in WI I have been drinking them since I could see over the bar. There are many different ways to order: Brandy/Whiskey and then Sweet/Sour/Press

My personal fav Brandy Old Fashioned Sour with olives

1 sugar cube and 3 dashes bitters muddled in a glass. Add a bit of SOUR SODA and stir to dissolve the ice. IIRC many places in the good ole US of A don't even know what sour soda is. See 50/50 for the best sour soda.

Fill glass with ice and a double shot of good brandy. Top off with sour soda and 2 olives.

Rinse. Repeat.

I'm a scotch snob. I'm not a big fan of wine (too filling), and beer is only great with food. When I go out to a bar, sometimes I get sick of drinking scotch straight when I can just pour that at home.

What's an effort-worthy manly cocktail? It can be semi-sweet at most.

Mojito is too sweet and just terrible at most bars where they suck at it.

Gin & Tonic? Never tried. Does sound 'refreshing'.
Martini - not refreshing though.

I just heard of Manhattan. How is that? Sounds good.

Recommend away.

The Manhattan (on the rocks) is my cocktail of choice. Maker's Mark is the usual bourbon I select. I don't know that I'd call it "refreshing" per se, but it is a tasty and (imho) manly cocktail.

Summer time... Bombay Saphire and grapefruit juice... definitely not sweet, but not sure if that is "manly" enough for you.

Oh, a Capirinhia is very refreshing. Not terribly complicated, but does require effort. As manly as you would expect the manliness of the ave. Brazillian male.

:hmm:
....

QFT... Amazing.

I've never had a good one in the states though. You gotta go to Brazil to REALLY get one made well.

But protip, do not let yourself get drunk on one. You'll have the worst hangover of your life the next morning, guaranteed.

Gin and Tonic really isnt a high-effort drink to make if that's one of hte things you're concerned about.

Don't worry about whether or not a cocktail is manly. Instead, if you like it, drink it. If someone questions whether or not a girly drink, asset that the fact that you are drinking it makes it manly.

IDGAF what people think about the drink I have in my hand (ok, I will admit that you'll never catch me with a Zima...). The only reason to worry about it is if you're not confident enough with your own self-image anyway, and that's what you should work on first.

Don't look down on good old reliable Gordon's. A really good gin at half the price of the snooty brands and most of the people recommending the more expensive brands are too young to drink and only mentioning what they saw advertised in this month's Maxim.
