Recommend me some Bicycle Tires...

I have an old Mountain Bike with huge, knobby tires. I want to get somethign more of a hybrid tire that will be better for road and packed dirt trails. I don't know anything abotu bike tires so I'm looking for some opinions.

Anyone have any input for me? This would just be for recreational riding every so often, not putting on hundreds of miles per summer...

Even on packed trails you'll want some tread or you risk wiping out on loose dirt. Your link is blocked at work so I can't tell if your suggestion fits the bill or not.

And that is the end of my lame advice.

How much time are you going to spend on the trails vs city riding? If it's only a once in a while thing, just get a set for the street and keep the knobbies for the trails. Bike tires are very easy to switch out. It should take 5 minutes with practice.

Buy round black ones with little bumps on them. I find they work much better than the trendy square tires...they look cool but don't ride worth a shit...


Those Michelins in the link look pretty nice. Price isn't that bad either. Just be sure to either fill the tire with "goop" or use "flat-free" tubes.

I just got of set of Kenda small block 8 tires. They have very low rolling resistance on pavement and they do very well on hard pack trails. The only problem I notice with them so far is that the sidewalls are really thin and they can get cut very easily.

I switched from some really really knobby tires to ones like this:

I don't do much off road - something like 90+% on streets.

Got them for $9.99 each at the local bike shop.

I have had good luck with Bontrager tires also. I use this tire for the bike I use on dirt roads and trails.

All the tires I've seen in this thread look like they'd work. I'd just get something cheap with a low profile tread/almost no tread. Slicks actually work fine too if you're being mellow.

The trail I normally rid on by my house is basically packed dirt. Really well packed, not much loose stuff at all. However during the summer I do some group ridese which are all on streets and the knobby tires that I have just make for extra work. I never ride "off road" like rocks, mud, etc.

I'll check the local shop and see if they can recommend something inexpensive.
