Hopefully you're feeling more perky today. But here are some more links for the next time you need them.

The Charlie Patton cover was something that I just stumbled upon. Here's the rest of his YouTube stuff.

Jackson Browne - I actually only knew Nico's cover of this song from the Royal Tenenbaums soundtrack. Hard to believe he wrote it at 16.

Alejandro Escovedo's cover of The Velvet Underground

Randy Newman

Nick Drake

Feeling more perky - well, as perky as I can while doing much-put-off paperwork & organizing. Gotta deal with tax problems - if that don't call for the blues, nothing does. It's a gloomy, rainy day and these links match my mood perfectly.

Charlie Patton - cover is named Mike Brosnan and he's a soulful guitarist, I'm gonna follow him - thanks for finding that.

Jackson Browne - These Days - he's a favorite of mine - that voice, that guitar. He performs that song over and over and has for years and he still makes it sound like he's just tossing it off. I take my hat off to this guy.

Alejandro Escovedo - Pale Blue Eyes - I love that song and I love the way he does it - thanks!

Vic Chesnutt - authentic sad soul. Hurts to listen to.

Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter - Oh My Girl - at first I thought it wasn't blues-y enough but it grew on me - thanks, good one.

Randy Newman - Louisiana 1927 - I don't think of Randy Newman when I think blues, but this is one does it. Good listen.

Bukka White - Jelly Roll Blues - thanks, another guy new to me. Greatly enjoyed it.

Nick Drake - Pink Moon - A friend suggested Nick Drake to me recently so thanks for linking this - yup, I like it. Want to hear more of his stuff.

If you have any more bring them on. I got a lot of paperwork . . .

Robert Cray is very good. One of my favorite albums for blues is BB King's "Blues on the Bayou". Every song is great.

Hey thank you! I like these.

Greg Brown - Cept You & Me Babe - new to me. Sweet voice, sweet classic rhythm section. Sad, it made me cry
Nina Simone - I want a little Sugar in my Coffee - my dad (pro jazz/swing pianist) LOVED Nina Simone so I know her songs but didn't appreciate them - dad died when I was in my teens. Glad you posted that, maybe it's time to give her a serious listen.
Jim Croce - Operator - Love his voice, great song
Bob Dylan/Emmylou Harris - One More Cup of Coffee - actually the video you linked is Bob Dylan/Joan Baez same tune, which I like better. Yup, definitely the emotions I'm going for.
Jakob Dylan/ - Nothing But The Whole Wide World - new to me. I like his voice and that song is a good one. Thanks for turning me on to him.
Johnny Cash doing NIN - Hurt - oh god yes, hits the spot. What I wanted.

Tom Waits - Bottom of the World - I love that song, it's beautiful. I don't know what is in his voice that makes it so awesome but I love it.

Any more? Keep 'em coming. Deep gratitude.

Greg Brown is one of my favorites. He's also a total technophobe (if you can't tell from the song I posted), so there's very little quality recordings available on the internet. I'd suggest tracking down "Rexroth's Daughter" if you can. One of the saddest, but best, song's I've heard. He also did a "folk opera" of the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice set in a mining town (I know, but it works in a O Brother Where Art Thou kinda way) with Anais Mitchell and Ani DiFranco (among others). There's some wonderful songs from that, including this one:

My introduction to Jim Croce was much like yours to Nina. Introduced to him by my dad, never liked him as a kid, but he grows on you as you get older. I also like his live recordings much more than his studio ones. I'm pretty sure that the one more cup of coffee link is with Emmylou Harris, and is just mislabeled. Joan has a much lower voice.

One more that I thought of: Nirvana did a haunting cover of Leadbelly's Where Did You Sleep Last Night? that sends shivers down my spine.

Leadbelly's songs are fantastic, but I often find the recordings to be so unlistenable that covers often do a better job portraying the meaning of the song.

There was a time Boz Scaggs made serious music.

I also realized no one had yet mentioned the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

How can Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Fleetwood Mac all make the conversation without anyone crediting John Mayall's Bluesbreakers?

Okay you got me! Love me some Skaggs and I needed to be reminded of that. Look, I guess I've used up too much memory space in my brain and somehow got rid of remembering things like Paul Butterfield Blues Band - well, it's back there now. And John Mayall & all the guys he played with will provide me with plenty of listening for the next dozen soul breakdowns if not more.

Thanks for keeping me sane!
