Feeling not sad but existential. Any good recommendations? What resonates with the weary soul?

Not totally blues, but Billie Holiday is great.

Mississippi John Hurt - Sweet and laid back

Ronnie Earl - High end blues. Approaching jazz, but very nice guitar.

BB King - High end blues,, but not as high as Ronnie. More vocal, mellow and soothing.

Little Walter - Premium harmonica work. Ballsy with lots of presence.

that's like asking someone to recommend some "rock"

More specific please?

Existential, world-weary. Matches a carefully-sipped precisely measured amount of Jack Daniels. Country-western that somebody who doesn't like country-western would like. Slow music that goes inside, twists around a bit and comes out after a while leaving me tired lonely but not quite so shaken any more. Hendrix after the show about dawn after she walks away. Something I've never heard before.

Don't mind me, I'm just in one of those moods. Thanks.

Skip James
Robert Johnson
Nick Cave (Let Love In album)
Uncle Tupelo (alt country)
White Stripes' cover of (Dolly Parton's) Jolene seems to fit in here (too lazy to youtube but it's there)
PJ Harvey

A rare Jeff Buckley track called 'Lost Highway' might be up your alley. IIRC, it's a cover of a song initially made famous many decades ago by Hank Sr. It's kind of blues country, but JB's version is more blues. Let me know what you think.

Thank you for that - never heard that before. Interesting.

The whole album was recorded live in Trinity church. Imo, it's worth listening to the whole album. Very real and present, yet ethereal at the same time.

I'm working through those - great list. Mucho gratitude.

Billie Holliday blues is awesome, her voice just cuts into you. You know she feels it.
MS John Hurt (love that abbreviation, saw it somewhere) - yup, just right.
Ronnie Earl - wasn't familiar with that, thanks for the name. Nice.
BB King - kinda forgot about him. Good, deep music.
Little Walter - whoa, a name from the past. Didn't really register his awesomeness back in the day, just took it for granted.

Skip James
Robert Johnson
Nick Cave (Let Love In album)
Uncle Tupelo (alt country)
White Stripes' cover of (Dolly Parton's) Jolene seems to fit in here (too lazy to youtube but it's there)
PJ Harvey

What a bunch of interesting stuff!

Skip James - I'd forgotten about him, not that I ever knew all that much.

Robert Johnson - towering great. I needed that. I listened to a bunch and found myself at Down to the Crossroads which led me naturally to Hendrix. I'm having an awesome time tonite.

Nick Cave - new to me, and I like a lot. THanks for turning me on to this.

Uncle Tupelo - also new to me and I like them a lot - gotta explore more of this!

White Stripes Jolene - I'm a secret Dolly Parton fan - when she's good, she's amazing. Jolene happened to be around a lot, god knows why, when my ex-husband started sleeping around, back when I still wanted to keep him - you know how you hear some old song over and over again? I can't help but associate that song with that period of my life and the painful memories. THANKS for that White Stripes cover, it's great and it totally cleared my brain out of those old memories. That is a fantastic haunting version, I've heard a lot of covers of that song and this is the deepest, most honest ever.

PJ Harvey - listened to a few of her songs, okay, then I got to The River which really clicked. Gotta listen to more.

Thank you for a fantastic evening so far!

I have to say, I'm absurdly surprised no one has mentioned Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc. Not to mention they are some of the best guitarists to have ever walked the Earth.
