I rarely go hiking but the gf and I are going on vacation with some hiking group. What's a good hiking shoe or hybrid/cross trainer (so I can use it after the week is over).

Check out some shoes by Keen or Merrell. I picked up some Merrells to hike with; they serve that duty very well and are also comfortable to wear as everyday shoes.

There's so many variables that go into this question. My advice is to go to a real outdoor store and try a bunch on and see what feels comfortable.

I don't recommend Vasquez. They fell apart on me pretty quick.

Depending on what you're actually doing a pair of Chacos will do the job quite well. They're open toed but I've climbed volcanoes, gone into the jungle, forded streams, etc with them. Unless there's a snake problem or I need to rotate shoes due to blisters I pretty much wear these.

Anything from Lowe -- a top Euro brand. Fantastic wear and sturdiness.

Merrell is good. Vasque, if you have wide feet, but they're not as sturdy as Lowe.

Best thing is to go to a store and try them all out. And if all things are equal, go with the Lowe brand

Depends. What kind of terrain? How much weight are you gong to be carrying? What kind of elevation? What kind of distances?

Based on what you're actually hiking, you might be able to get away with sandals/sneakers.

My last pair of Vasque lasted almost ten years and my current pair are getting close to ten years. I also have a pair of low-cut Lowa's which I use outside of hiking around town if it's raining out and I'm walking the dogs.

You rarely hike but are vacationing with a hiking group. Why?

Your GF has been plowed by several of them, guaranteed.

BTW, the brand is Vasque, not Vasquez, and they are some of the best boots made today. They are also made by Red Wing, perhaps the last U.S. manufacturer of boots, whose quality has been know for decades. My Vasques have taken me on every kind of trail you can imagine, and always performed and held up excellently. As to the OP's question, a trail runner may be your answer; they can handle off-pavement pretty well while letting walk around town in relative comfort.

Go to a store and try out different shoes to see what's comfortable for you, not necessarily what people suggest here.

Personally I'm a big fan of Merrells. They fit my feet better than any other brand I've tried and my current pair has lasted through 4 years of regular use which is amazing considering how quickly I go through shoes.

Brand means nothing. Comfort means everything. Go to REI and try on everything they have.

BTW...Most likely you don't need hiking specific shoes. Trail Runners of any brand will do just fine. Hiking Boots are best when carrying a pack or for anyone that required extra ankle support.

Any advice to use a particular brand should be taken with a grain of salt.
