I know, I know. Any that are as close to real coffee as possible? Prefer something that is not bright and sour.

Recently ran into a situation where I needed some. Bought a jar of Nescafe and it's surprisingly good. I'll buy some more.

Yeah Via is the only way to go if you want anything remotely drinkable from an instant coffee.

Another recommendation for Nescafe Taster's Choice.

One of the smoothest instant coffees.

GOOD instant coffee? Can't be done...it's unpossible because there is no such thing as GOOD instant. Some are drinkable...but none are good.

All of you who like Starbuck Via, do you add milk or creamer and/or sweeteners to that? I tried some when it first came out, and I did not like it at all. Tossed the entire pack into the trash. Maybe it was too strong for my tastes, but it did not taste good. I usually drink my coffee black and much prefer Nescafe Taster's Choice.

I tend to like lighter roasts and usually only find Starbucks Blonde to be acceptable, so that might be why.

Black. I pretty much always drink coffee plain and black. The infrequent exceptions are cappuccino as a dessert(frothed milk and sugar), and I'll sometimes twist some citrus oil in my espresso.

OK, I am still trying to figure out the appeal of dehydrated coffee, especially now that the neu coffee wave has brought those silly machines and cups.

Maybe I am crazy, but the hardest and most time consuming process of brewing a single cup of coffee to me is bringing the water to boil? I used to do cowboy coffee before I found the single brew filter holders. similar to this one but plastic. Apparently a lot harder to find because the yuppie machines have taken over "convenient" coffee searches. Mine was plastic but the same idea, you brought water to a boil and then poured it over the ground beans and filter of your choice.

I then upgraded to a travel french press but the idea is the same, that you might as well be taking caffeine pills instead of drinking dehydrated coffee. I don't like anything added to my coffee so I am kind of sensitive to the taste of it.

By the way, I was living out of vehicles and tents while all this was going down, when I moved back into a house, I just used a regular drip brewer and am not a coffee snob by any means.

I've really been getting into strong dark roasts without any additives.

It took me a few years (all of childhood, high school and college) to reach this point, but I can enjoy a good cup of coffee without sugar or cream.
It started with relying on no sugar, or adding Stevia if possible, but slowly but surely in the past year I've migrated from "chugging black coffee just to get through it and to the caffeinated result" to the point where I can actually sip and enjoy said black coffee.

My only experience with instant was giving a random Via sample (or two) a try at one point, was quite impressed... knowing it was instant, mind you.

My only other experience with instant coffee is Nescafe, and even then, it was never "brewed." If I had Nescafe, it was pouring the packet straight into the gullet and washing it down quickly. :awe:
I have Army MREs and an easily influenced mind to thank for that.

I've hated coffee all my life. Never liked it plain, with sugar, with milk, with anything.

And then one day when I was pretty tired at work I grabbed a cup to see if it could wake me up. I drink about a pot of dark roast coffee black every day now. Love the stuff.

Hmm, I guess a lot more people prefer dark roasts.

I like the higher caffeine content of light to medium roasts and they irritate my stomach less. The lighter roasts I really, really like (especially with Jamaican Blue, Kona, and Yirgacheffe) are better on the lighter end of the spectrum. Even for instant I prefer smoother blends.

The parallels with "regular" drug use here are amusing. Not so much if you are a true caffeine addict, but maybe try the pills instead?

Never bothered to read your other posts, but if you are one of the many in support of the drug war, I truly hope you see the irony.

If not, I apologize, and surely you can see the irony of the drug war. So much wasted money.

I was striving to use irony in its most proper form. In this case I was using very literal definitions of the word "drug" and "war". Just because some dipshit politician wants to use the phrase colloquially, does not mean I am responsible for that.

I recently tried UCC 117, my first foray into instant coffee, and now I'm hooked. So convenient. If you're in the Bay Area you can for sure get it from Japanese supermarkets like Nijiya and Mitsuwa, not sure if Ranch 99 or other Asian markets carry it.

I'll drink a cup or two a day, at most - typically, the process of having consume a large quantity of very hot liquid just to get my fix is more time consuming and irritating than it should be... so I've largely depended upon the pills for the past few years.

I get a certain itch - the pills are my lifeforce. I abandon everything to ensure I get caffeine in the event I leave the pills behind somewhere.

And I hope Congress wins their war on drugs, and puts away all drug users for life. Our prisons have plenty of room!
And the USA has been lax lately regarding growth of the ratio of citizens to incarcerated fellows. I don't know why the prison population growth has been slowing down lately, but this shall not last! It must grow!
