I'll be graduating in May and have accepted a job where I will be traveling on occasion (few times a month?). I'm looking for a good nice luggage (duffel, garment bag, etc.) that will stand up and would be somewhat fashionable for a young guy (no brigtt yellows or anything like that). Im hoping i can squeeze this out of my parents as a graduation gift so im not too concerned about price, theyll probably be willing to get me something nice. Any ideas?

Heh, I just use the cheapy luggage you can get for $30 / set. It's crappy, but it looks OK and mine has actually held up pretty well. I don't use it a whole lot, but when I do I tend to abuse it...last trip I took, I loaded up one of my roller suitcases with 50lbs of tools and checked it at the airport. :Q Then I rolled it 1.5 miles over busted concrete back to my apartment, still loaded with all the tools. It came out of it a lot better than I expected.

Costco usually has a deal every year (summer maybe) on a decent set of luggage for ~$80. Brand is Ricardo Beverly Hills. Ours has held up pretty well.

It looks like... well, luggage.

And hey, don't be one of those assholes that puts your carry-on bag and your "personal item" (usually laptop bag/briefcase/backpack) in the overhead compartment. Put the personal item under the seat in front of you where it belongs. :| I hate having to check my luggage at the gate because the overhead compartments are full.

Thrift stores often have luggage in the 3-10 dollar range. The suitcase I've been using for the last four years still has the $2.98 price tag stapled to the inside. This year we replaced the worn out duffle with a practically new one for $7. Why pay more than you have to?

Something to consider, figure out the weight of the luggage. I have a big Jaguar case (JC Penneys). It weighs 17 lbs. With current airline regs and enforcement, that means 33 lbs of stuff as they will charge for over 50 lbs. So, look for weight too.

I figure the only acceptable carry-ons are overnight bags, flight attendant luggage, and those hanging item folding baggage items.

Not sure what you mean by flight attendant luggage, but most sets of luggage come with a bag that's exactly the max dimensions allowed for a carry-on bag. Most people have one of those and that's fine. It goes in the overhead compartment. Most people also have a laptop bag or whatever also. That is supposed to go under the seat in front of you.

Another vote for Ricardo at Costco. We have two sets and mine has been abused on trips from Cali to Dallas, Chicago, Boston, LA, Reno, Portland and Denver.

It has been abused. We just bought another set for the family, and the new sets at Costco are a definite upgrade over my older 4yr old set. Better zippers, handles, pulls, and very lightweight yet sturdy non-rip fabric.

Excellent for $150 and much better than any crap from a department store you could find. I think it was Consumer Reports Best Buy as well.

Absolutely depends on what kind of airplane you are on, the class you are seated in, and how full the plane is.

I think you should start a rant about that. You seem just a weee bit passionate about it. Can you recommend me a way to format text like that?

Since this thread was popped up again, I have an addition. The TravelPro WallStreet Deluxe Rolling case, available at moriluggage.com and other fine sites (or Mori's B&M) will fit our 15" widescreen laptop and a bit of overnight clothes. It will also do a second small laptop if you put it in a neoprene case. We have not flown with it yet, but it is about the biggest rolling case we could find to fit a widescreen and a second small laptop in and have a little room for clothes or business "gear".

We always get Samsonite stuff from Kohls when they have a 50% off sale and a nice coupone or something.

If you buy too cheap, the wheels on your suitcase will get messed up and really noisy after only a few trips...

I got a $20-$30 walmart suitcase, and its kind of embarassing wheeling it around the airport with the constant *thunk thunk thunk* sounds.

Hey Whalen, are those suitcases sturdy enough to withstand the rough treatement for just one trip?

Thanks.

Check Marshalls/Target/TJ Maxx type stores for luggage.

Picked up some very nice "Swiss" luggage from Marshalls.. High end, but cheap!

Uh, absolutely not. My toiletry/spare-set-of-clothes bag and laptop bag WILL be going in the overhead. Period. Combined they take up about 1/2 of the space of a typical carry-on. Believe it or not, but I've never once seen the overhead bins full, and I fly a gosh-awful amount. What airline do you take? Southwest?
