I bought a whole slew of books a few months ago (about 50 bucks worth from a used book store) but I'm almost done with them now. I need some new reading material. I tend to like sci-fi, and some of my favorite so far include:

Dune (Frank Herbert)
Rama series (Arthur C Clarke)
most Michael Crichton books
Ender's Game
America 2040 series (Evan Innes)

I also remember reading a few Stephen King novels when I was younger and they were ok. So based on these facts, can anyone suggest some good books? Thanks.

"Hop on Pop" seems to be at your level, or mine, I can't even read what I just wrote

If you like Halo (or even if you don't) you should check out the 1st, 3rd, and now 4th books, they're actually pretty entertaining reads.

H.G. Wells would be good but you might find them to be a bit boring since they're not written in quite as modern of style.

Maybe His Dark Materials trilogy.

I actually do enjoy a lot of classics... I probably should have mentioned Wuthering Heights and A Farewell to Arms in my list too. I actually started reading War of the Worlds last time I went back home; got about 3o or 40 pages into it before I had to leave again but it was pretty interesting.

Copy and pasted from another thread:
I'm reading Cryptonomicon again, I enjoy most of Stephenson's work. You can try the original cyberpunk, Neuromancer, or something more recent in the genre such as Altered Carbon. Forever Peace, Starship Troopers, Armor, and Fallen Dragon all offer a glimpse of future combat. Neverwhere shows a fantasy underground of London. The Postman,Souls in the Great Machine, Peace War, and The Stand show various thoughts on a post-apocalyptic society. Perdido Street Station was my introduction to steam punk. Jennifer Government is a fun look into future capitalism gone overboard.

For a real book, have you looked at the sequel of books to enders game? Good series.

I'm reading Cryptonomicon right now. About 850 pages in. It's..... epic. Took a long time to get really interesting, and even still a lot of it shouldn't be interesting, but I find myself staying up till 1 or 2 in the morning with it in my hands. I'll definitely check out the others you mentioned, thanks!

If you like his writing style, check out his Baroque Cycle. I'm a big sci-fi / cyberpunk fan, and the first Stephenson book I read was Snow Crash.

I keep on telling myself that the Baroque Cycle is next (I've only read through it once), but there's just so many books I want to read, and so little time. Good luck!

Dark Tower series by Stephen King. Seriously, it's awesome, epic, engaging.... his best work by far.

I also highly recomend The Wheel of Time (Robert Jorden) and The Sword of Truth (Terry Goodkind), but neither of those are finished.

I just finished Dune and finally picked up the 3rd and 4th books of the Rama series.

We should have a literary analysis discussion !

Gene Wolf - Book of the New Sun (technically 4 books, but normally sold as 2 known as Shadow&Claw and Sword&Citadel)

Did you read the entire Ender series?

8 books with 2 more in the works.

:Q I had no idea there were sequels!

Ummm... were you aware there are five more books in the original Dune series plus several more series by Brian Herbert?

Bah, the ones by Brian Herbert sucked.

Wicked by Gregory Maguire. Not exactly sci-fi, but an excellent fantasy book.

Looks like we have very similar taste in books. As other people have already mentioned, George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire books are great. But for a great sci-fi book on par with Ender's Game, I would highly recommend The Mote in God's Eye. Seriously, it's good stuff... the sequel is good as well.
