Looking for a good quality $50 or less 2 speaker plus base unit system. Perferably ones that are sold at one of the following local retailers Best Buy/Circuit City/Target/Wal-Mart/Office Max/Office Depot/Staples.

what are your options?

i'd say pick up a set of Logitech 2.1's (not sure which model #). They should fall into your price range. You could also get your hands on a cheap but nice 5.1 setup for that price. (z530, x640 etc)

You could try Compusa and see if they still carry the EV SonicXS ($50) and SonicXJR 2.1s ($20). I bought the latter on clearance few months ago and they rock.

Going with the 2.1 option. System has the basic AC97 sound. Looking around the main three manufactures are Altec Lancing (sp), Logitech and Creative.

You get what you pay for. $50 for a 5.1 system means that it sounds like $10 speakers.

For that price, you should also consider headphones, which will produce much better quality than similarly priced speakers.

Only have a AC97 stereo sound card so going 2.1.

For a 2.1, EV SonicXS from CompUSA rules everything under $100. It competes well with Klipsch's ProMedia 2.1s.

Otherwise, Logitech Z-3s are good 2.1s.

The best 5.1s for under $100 are the Logitech X-530s (around $65).

I got Logitech X-230 speakers and have been very happy. They are @$50 or so and they have had some good reviews.

I think I paid $60 for my z640s, and they don't sound like $10 speakers....at least IMO. In fact, they rock. I'd either look for those if you want 5.1, or the Logitech Z3s for 2.1

The Z-3's mentioned in this thread seem fairly popular. However, if you can find the EV SonicXS at CompUSA mentioned by Byung, that would be the way to go.

werd the z-640's are 50-60 dollar speakers that think they are 150 dollar speakers

I've got a set of Creative Labs Inspire T3000s on my laptop. They're very nice. Going for 45 on newegg right now. I'm hearing a lot of support for Logitech's in this thread, and I'm thinking of buying a set for my desktop soon. I just wanted to give another decent option.
