ok I've been reading AVS and fk it's just so much this and that. I get the feeling for my needs a plasma is enough. My budget is 1.5k max but I have some common sense so I'm not looking to blow the whole thing on it. I'd prefer to get something 42" or bigger. Or do I need something bigger. Right now it's going in my room. Living room has a 60 inch but that's my roomate.

In 6 months I plan on buying a condo so this will go from being in my room to living room. 42 to small? Again I'm a best bang for the buck. I don't care about impressing people. I saw a 30 something insignia at best buy and read it's a samsung. I'm thinking about getting that to hold me over for awhile.

Ummm, an Insignia is a samsung? I find that unlikely. Is that what they are doing now? Id be careful going that route, Insignia are dog piles....

Id say 40" is the smallest you want for a living room. I use a 40" in my own bedroom. We have a 50" pioneer elite in our living room, its plenty big. Id say stick with samsung personally. Maybe LG or Sharp or Toshiba for second choices. Sony are overpriced and not worth it. That probably only slightly helps you narrow down options though.

As for LCD/Plasma/LED, kinda hard choice there. I havnt done enough research lately to answer that. It will probably partly come down to what you want to spend. 1.5K is a lot of money for a TV these days so, you could pretty much get anything with that.... On further note, I think LED is pretty sweet but I really havnt paid much attention to that technology lately.

It is kind of crazy how fast prices drop. I bought my 40" 6 series Samsung last year for around $1000. Now you can prolly get 50-60" for that price or an LED even.

Also, some features like wifi and netflix and crap in some newer TV's, so you need to weigh those type of options as well.

Not sure how much that helps you but anyways.

Get a Panasonic TC-PXXS2 (1080P Plasma) and call it a day. GREAT TVs for the price. The XX is so you can choose what size is right for you - they have something like 42", 47", 50", 52", etc. I believe the 42" S2 is around $600 these days.

That leaves you a bunch of cash to put aside for a future TV when they become slimmer, brighter, more power efficient, all have 120Hz capability, etc.

There are tons of great deals right now (I just pulled the trigger last night, replacing my aging Sharp AQUOS with a Samsung PN50C7000 Plasma).

Best bang for the buck is obviously Plasma. Even with the current sales, they tend to be running several hundred dollars less than a comparable LCD or LED. Size is going to be dependent on your room size and seating arrangement - although stepping down from a 60" to anything else will likely feel small at first.

Is 3D a big deal to you?
How much direct light do you get in the viewing room (my family room is far too bright for plasma for example, but the den is perfect) ?
How close will you be the TV on average?

Room functions don't matter. Distance matters. If you're going to end up ~10ft, you'll regret not going >50". You can easily do that on your budget anyway.

Also, whether the room will be sunlit or not, etc etc.

Another vote for Panasonic plasma. The biggest you can afford. I have the cheapest 1080P model in 46", and am very happy with it. I sit about 8-10 feet from it.

Amazon has a 58" S2 for ~$1300 which is only slightly smaller than his 60" but will look infinitely better.
