I'm a professional in NYC and regularly travel to Westchester and Long Island for work. I've been using T-mobile for 2 years and realize I don't use very many minutes / data etc. We're talking <1GB, <1000 minutes, <500 texts. I'm looking for a cost-effective plan ($40 all-in or less) that maintains strong voice/data service in the locations I frequent (NYC, Westchester, Long Island).

I notice T-mobile has a $40 "prepaid" plan, but that price seems not to include taxes and fees. Is that correct?

Would you recommend Ting? Boostmobile? Suggestions plz! Thanks.

For NYC, T-Mobile and Verizon are usually the top carriers, but for your usecase, you just want reliability right?

T-Mobile is rolling out band 12 in nyc/LI which helps in building penetration/basements, but you need a new phone for that

Don't go for ting/boost(they are on sprint, which isnt that good in this region and you can't use voice&data at the same time, and you need to buy their phones)

For all plans, they are generally pretax... Prepaid plans have fewer taxes than postpiad plans

You could look at lycamobile mvno- they use tmobile's network, can get unlimited talk/text+2GB data for $35+tax. Alternative would be h2o/cricket/straighttalk (all uses at&t), around $40 as well for similar features

They aren't taking new signups until next week (maybe). They use t-mobile postpaid network just as you are using now, just resell it for "business" users.

If you wanted a t-mobile mvno, you can try ultra mobile

Keep in mind their is no roaming on mvnos. So check that coverage will be the same in the places you go to using prepaid coverage.

Prepaid doesn't normally have taxes and fees. You might get charged a sales tax (like $3) if you buy your refills from the carrier directly. If you buy your refills online, then usually no tax.

Yes, but I like to avoid ST like the plague after having them for a while. One of the worst companies to deal with ever.
What issues did you have with them? I've had them for the better part of two and a half years without many complaints. In fact they've gotten even better. They're practically throwing data at me now. When I signed up it was $45 for unlimited talk, text, and what I think was 2.5gb LTE, then 3gb, and now I'm up to 5gb and I'm not paying a cent more. And speeds are great. Have great coverage everywhere from rural upstate areas all the way to Chicago, Detroit, all over the east coast, south and Midwest. Customer service was the only slightly meh part. I've only had to deal with them once or twice early on but eventually things were resolved.

Customer service is outsourced and terrible. I am not one to normally complain about customer service, but they were horrible. They just want to keep sending you new sim cards blaming the problem on the sim card. They throttled and were not clear about the throttle points, also would not admit to it (although they got sued and now offer 3-5GB). If you read threads, people still get throttled at random times for no reason, even before they hit the data limit.

My speeds/reliability were hit or miss. During busy times, I would have full signal, but no websites would load. People on postpaid ATT in the same spot as me loaded stuff just fine. The data connection on ST was hit or miss and it wasn't the signal. I think they have terrible QoS/proxy servers. This was in Chicago also. I'm on cricket now (ATT service) and the data seems more reliable in the same areas even though it is throttled to 8mbps.

I get the feeling most people have moved onto cricket, gophone, or tmobile as they are more competitive now. Before ST was the only one offering a $45 smartphone plan, now everyone is and no one wants to deal with ST. I was using ST ever since the Nokia E71 sim swap trick was out and left last year.

Thank you for the input. I switched to T-mobile prepaid $40 and will see how it goes. They only billed approx $43.50 for the first month, which is less than I expected.

Well, customer service for these mvnos are generally not top notch

That's why you are paying less for this...

Oh, OP... Forgot to mention one possible work around.

If you have access to a nexus 6, you can activate project fi Sim. And you should be able to move the Sim to any smartphone(will only work on T-Mobile). $30 for unlimited talk/text, 1GB($10/additional GB)
