Got a client wanting a speaker system for a 4000sf vehicle shop. Ceilings are about 30' and speakers would likely be ceiling mounted. Needs to good balance of price, clarity, and ability to cover the entire area.

Currently I'm considering the following:

-Audioengine A5+ or HD3 (which of these is better? Both are $400 on Amazon)

-Snag some Mission 762s on ebay... got 2 of them in my 3200sf events area right now and they cover the whole room surprisingly well. I'd think 4 of them would have no issues covering 4000sf, even with ceilings twice as high. Used is always sketchy, but this client does love saving money and buying from a reliable seller isn't a big deal.

Biggest concerns are filling the whole space and whether I'm going to have issues running wires up to about 200'. Got some quality Monoprice speaker wire but still... thoughts?

I take it that vehicle shop is an open area, isn't carpeted or isn't full of couches and drapes, so it won't take that much fill that room. I'd worry more about echoes which ironically can be solved by drapes and rugs to improve clarity. What have you tried so far?

Ceiling mounting would waste a lot of sound. Suggest wall mounting. I'm guessing this isn't for concerts but just even sound throughout the room? I'd go for more speakers so half the room isn't deaf while the other half can't hear a thing. That's such a large area you'd probably need more than 4 speakers. Some high efficiency klipsch bookshelves would probably be good enough.

Like Razel said...it's the echoes and what not that are going to destroy how everything sounds. Not to mention the vibrations possible at higher decibels.

I think they wanted the ceiling mount to minimize risk of people tampering with them or even being a visual distraction.

And yes, it's a mostly empty space. Standard warehouse with sheet metal walls and a concrete floor with offices and a maintenance room covering maybe 30% of it.

Speakers won't be at high volume, just background music/news.

Haven't tried anything yet - I just haven't done a speaker installation like this before and wanted some second opinions before sending in the quote. Like I said, a couple Mission 762s cover 3000sf of similar space with a 10' drop ceiling just fine so I don't think I need to go too crazy... 4 of those Behringers look about right.

giantpandaman - when you say Klipsch bookshelves are you talking about something like this? https://www.amazon.com/KEF-Q100-Boo...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=VBG4KBBSJ61BF8T63DF4

I think either those or the Behringers would work fine... Behringers would be $200 cheaper if I get 4 of them; any compelling reason to spend up on the Klipsches?

Thanks guys!

Naah, too expensive!

It’s not often that a pair of speakers compels me to re-experience favorite tracks for hours on end. But, that’s exactly what happened with these Monoprice PA speakers. It reminded me of my initial reaction to the Behringer B215XLs, but even better-sounding for less money.

Nice! Those look solid. What's a good economical way to drive them? Can they be hooked up to a good sound card or will I need a receiver? Recommendations?

You need a receiver or amp for everything except powered ("active") speakers.
