This would be for my in laws who already have a samsung tablet and I want to get them a non subsidized phone. I know there are some good ones but which one would you buy and why? This is for AT&T so I believe i cannot get one of those Moto phones right?

What's their use case? Any specific preferences, and what do they have right now?

Yep, the X, G, and E will work on AT&T. I don't recommend the E, as it won't be supported by Motorola (in terms of software updates). I have the G (2015 version, 2GB RAM/16 GB variant), and can highly recommend it. The X is also an excellent choice.

I am not sure there use case but they are retired and only have a dumb phone now. Good to hear the G is a good phone. It is easy to get hung up on the specs when in real world performance it may not matter.

The G is a great phone, and this is my first "mid-tier" phone. I used the iPhone 6/GS6/flagships before this phone. Performance is decent, and battery life is excellent. It is getting Marshmallow very soon (soak tests have gone out). Are they tech savvy?

Another strong recommendation for the Moto G 3rd gen but make sure to get the 2GB/32GB model.

Wait until CyberMonday November 30th http://www.motorola.com/us/special-offers/motorola-shop-all-sale.html

Edit: Nevermind above

I got my in laws the Moto X Pure edition since it was on sale for $300. I am glad you guys like the moto phones, slickdeals.net people hate them and yet the only reason is because there were better deals for the Nexus 5 phone but that was above my price range and the needs of my in laws. So far this phone looks good and the pure edition is going to get marshmellow so I think this will be a solid phone.

Nexus 6 is the best bang for the buck phone on the market for PC enthusiast types who like to tweak the phone to their liking. Nothing like having a fresh custom version of Chroma installed with minimal google apps, rooted with adblock and all the rest.

Even with stock android marshmellow it's great though.

You can get a straight talk iPhone 5S for $299 from Walmart. Works perfect with an ATT sim card.

You can get Oneplus X with that budget if you can wait until next month.

Any reason why you don't consider redmi note 2? It have micro sd support, removable battery, dual sim.
