Hello group,

Is there a few monitors that stand out as the best for computer gaming right now? Would have to be a decent sized screen with 2ms or less speed.

Thank you,

What kind of gaming, exactly?

Both the Asus VH236H and Alienware OptX AW2310 have been [in]famously used as the monitors at EVO2K. Both lovely monitors although the Alienware is a bit overpriced.

Hi, my old computer is finished, so I am in the process of building a new system.

I will be playing COD3 and BF3, when they come out.

Cordially,

it really depends on what you're looking for, speed or image quality, and a lot of it depends on your budget

for image quality the best gaming monitors are likely of the 27-30" IPS 2560x variety, albeit a bit pricey at they pretty much start in the $1000+ range, for instance the Dell U2711 and U3011

for speed things get a lot cheaper but still very expensive relative to the average cost of a 1080p LCD, you're going to be looking at $300-400+ for a 120Hz monitor with 0 input lag, something long the lines of the BenQ XL2410T or Alienware OptX AW2310.

For the least compromising display you're going to have to go back to CRT with something like the Sony FW900, but that's not cheap (cost will be somewhere between the previous examples for a used product) and doesn't give much insurance as CRT have long since been discontinued

Other than that if all those options are too expensive there is a ocean of options available for decent sub $200 LCDs where it is hard to pin point just one or two best options.

On the LCD side of things, I'm nearly 100% confident the BenQ XL2410T is the fastest you can get. Its generally very hard to find a single reviewer that does a thorough test of multiple 120Hz monitors. The few reviewers that actually test things properly show it taking around 5-8ms on average to process and change pixels. The image quality is horrendous however. The panel is grossly overdriven, but remember that this is ultimately a professional gaming monitor. Performance first, Image Quality second.

From what I've researched, the Alienware seems to be one of the slower 120Hz monitors on the market. It does indeed have quite a bit better image quality than the BenQ, but again, so do 1940's television sets.

You have to decide for yourself how much you value certain aspects of a monitor. There is, and will never be a perfect monitor for everything. There have been times that I have looked at my friends old 24" MVA panel wishing my colors looked as beautiful. Other times it is reversed, my washed out colors on my 2233RZ allowed me play L4D perfectly without a flashlight (along with a slight gamma boost), while it was absolutely not possible on his monitor.

yeah, the default picture modes on the BenQ are pretty bad, with some tweaking they can be brought up to average TN quality IMO

however while the preset game modes might be fugly, they do pretty much allow night vision which is yet another plus of this monitor (and its not the same as simply pumping up the gamma to achieve the affect)

I can easily play without a flashlight in L4D or Crysis in the lowest lit areas with these game modes without having to mess with gamma. The only complaint I have is that the buttons to access the monitor menu to switch to these settings isn't as easy as it should be, it would be amazing if I could swap between profiles with the press of a single button but unfortunately its not that simple

Not trying to hijack here but I have a similar question.

I'm using a Dell wfp2407 and have been wondering if there is anything in the 24" (1200p, ips) realm that would be a worthy upgrade.

Just grabbed an Alienware lappy with an RGB screen and am FLOORED by it so...anything sub $700 in the desktop realm that can give similar performance?
